usake bad un dusht brahmanoan ne galiyaan dete hue sapatnik rrishi gautam ko apamanit kiya aur un par dhele tatha pattharoan se bhi prahar kiya. kasht aur manasik santap se bhi pi dit gautam ne us ashram ko tatkal chho d diya. unhoanne vahaan se tin kilomitar ki doori par jakar apana ashram banaya. un brahmanoan ne gautam ko tang karane hetu vahaan bhi unaka pichha kiya. unhoanne kaha– ‘jab tak tumhare oopar go hatya ka pap hai, tab tak tumhean kisi bhi vaidikadev athava pitriyajn ke anushthan karane ka adhikar prapt nahian hai. isalie tumhean koee yajn-yagadi karm nahian karana chahie.’ muni gautam ne b di kathinaee aur du:kh ke sath pandrah dinoan ko bitaya, kintu dharm-karm se vanchit hone ke karan unaka jivan doobhar ho gaya. unhoanne un muniyoan, brahmanoan se gohatya ka prayashchit batane hetu bar-bar du:khi man se anunay-vinay ki.

unaki dinata par taras khate hue un muniyoan ne kaha– ‘gautam! tum apane pap ko prakat karate hue arthath kiye gaye gohatya-sambandhi pap ko bolate hue tin bar prithvi ki parikrama karake phir ek mahine tak vrat karo. vrat ke bad jab tum is brahmagiri ki ek sau ek parikrama karoge, usake bad hi tumhari shuddhi hogi. brahmanoan ne ukt prayashchit ka vikalp batalate hue kaha ki yadi tum ganga ji ko isi sthan par lakar unake jal mean snan karo, tadanantar ek karo d parthiv liang banakar mahadev ji ki upasana (parthiv poojan) karo, usake bad pun: ganga snan karake is brahmagiri parvat ki gyarah parikrama karane ke bad ek sau kalashoan (gh doan) mean jal bhar parthiv shivaliang ka abhishek karo, phir tumhari shuddhi ho jaegi aur tum go hatya ke pap se mukt ho jaoge.’ gautam ne un rrishiyoan ki batoan ko svikar karate hue kaha ki ve brahmagiri ki athava parthiv poojan kareange. tatpashchath unhoanne ahalya ko sath lekar brahmagiri ki parikrama ki aur ativ nishtha ke sath parthiv liangoan ka nirman kar mahadev ji ki aradhana ki.

muni gautam dvara atoot shraddha bhakti se parthiv poojan karane par parvati sahit bhagavan shiv prasann ho gaye. unhoanne apane pramathaganoan sahit prakat hokar kaha- ‘gautam! maian tumhari bhakti se bahut prasann hooan. gautam shiv ke adbhut roop ko dekhakar anand vibhor ho uthe. unhoanne bhaktibhav poorvak shiv ko pranam kar unaki lambi stuti ki. ve hath jo dakar kh de hue aur bhagavan shiv se bole ki ‘ap mujhe nishpap (paparahit) banane ki kripa karean.’ bhagavan shiv ne kaha– ‘tum dhany ho. tum mean kisi bhi prakar ka koee pap nahian hai. sansar ke log tumhare darshan karane se paparahit ho jate haian. tum sada hi meri bhakti mean lin rahate ho, phir papi kaise ho sakate ho? un dushtoan ne tumhare sath chhal-kapat kiya hai, tum par ghor atyachar kiya hai. isalie ve hi papi, hatyare aur durachari haian. un sab kritaghnoan ka kabhi bhi uddhar nahian hoga, jo log un duratmaoan ka darshan karegean ve bhi papi ban jaeange.’

bhagavan shiv ki bat sunakar rrishi gautam ashcharyachakit ho uthe. unhoanne shiv ko pun:-pun: pranam kiya aur kaha– ‘bhagavanh! unhoanne to mera b da upakar kiya hai, ve maharshi dhany haian, kyoanki unhoanne mere lie param kalyanakari kary kiya hai. unake durachar se hi mera mahanh kary siddh hua hai. unake bartav se hi hamean apaka param durlabh darshan prapt ho saka hai.’ gautam ki bat sunakar bhagavan shiv atyant prasann hokar unase bole– vipravar! tum sabhi rrishiyoan mean shreshth ho, maian tum par atishay prasann hooan, isalie tum koee uttam var maang lo.’ rrishi gautam ne mahesh ko bar-bar pranam karate hue kaha ki lok kalyan karane ke lie ap mujhe ganga pradan kijie. is prakar bolate hue gautam ne lokahit ki kamana se bhagavan shiv ke charanoan ko pak d liya. tab bhagavan maheshvar ne prithvi aur svarg ke sarabhoot us jal ko nikala, jo brahma ji ne unhean unake vivah ke avasar par diya tha. vah param pavitr jal stri ka roop dharan karake jab vahaan kh da hua, to rrishi gautam ne usaki stuti karate hue namaskar kiya. gautam ne ganga ki aradhana karake pap se mukti prapt ki. gautam tatha muniyoan ko ganga ne poorn pavitr kar diya. vah gautami kahalayi. gautami nadi ke kinare tryanbakam shivaliang ki sthapana ki gee, kyoanki isi shart par vah vahaan thaharane ke lie taiyar huee thian.

gautam ne kaha– ‘sampoorn bhuvan ko pavitr karane vali gange! narak mean girate hue mujh gautam ko pavitr kar do.’ bhagavan shankar ne bhi kaha– ‘devi! tum is muni ko pavitr karo aur vaivasvat manu ke atthaisavean kali yug tak yahian raho.’ ganga ne bhagavan shiv se kaha ki ‘maian akeli yahaan apana nivas banane mean asamarth hooan. yadi bhagavan maheshvar ambika aur apane any ganoan ke sath rahean tatha maian sabhi nadiyoan mean shreshth svikar ki jaooan, tabhi is dharatal par rah sakati hooan.’ bhagavan shiv ne ganga ka anurodh svikar karate hue kaha ki ‘tum yahaan sthit ho jao aur maian bhi yahaan rahooanga.’ usake bad vividh devata, rrishi, anek tirth tatha sammanit kshetr bhi vahaan a pahuanche. un sabhi ne adarapoorvak gautam, ganga tatha bhootabhavan shiv ka poojan kiya aur prasannatapoorvak unaki stuti karate hue apana sir jhukaya. unaki aradhana se prasann ganga aur girish ne kaha – ‘shreshth devataoan! ham tum logoan ka priy karana chahate haian, isalie tum var maango.’

devataoan ne kaha ki ‘yadi ganga aur bhagavan shiv prasann haian, to hamare aur manushyoan ka priy karane ke lie ap log kripapoorvak yahian nivas karean. ganga ne uttar dete hue kaha ki ‘maian to gautam ji ka pap kshalit kar vapas chali jaooangi, kyoanki apake samaj mean meri visheshata kaise samajhi jaegi aur us visheshata ka pata kaise lagega? sabaka priy karane hetu ap sab log yahaan kyoan nahian rahate haian? yadi ap log yahaan meri visheshata siddh kar sakean, to maian avashy hi rahooangi.’ devataoan ne bataya ki jab sianh rashi par brihaspati ji ka padarpan hoga, us samay ham sabhi akar yahaan nivas kareange. gyarah varshoan tak logoan ka go-patak yahaan kshalit hoga, us paparashi ko dhone ke lie ham log saritaoan mean shreshth ap ganga ke pas aya kareange. mahadevi! samast logoan par anugrah karate hue hamara priy karane hetu tumhean aur bhagavan shankar ko yahaan par nity nivas karana chahie.’

devataoan ne age bataya ki ‘guru (brihaspati) jab tak sianh rashi par yahaan virajaman hoange, tabhi tak ham log yahaan nivas kareange. us samay ham log tumhare jal mean tinoan samay snan karake bhagavan shankar ka darshan karate hue shuddh hoange.’ is prakar rrishi gautam aur devataoan ke dvara prarthana karane par bhagavati ganga aur bhagavan shiv vahaan avasthit ho gaye. tabhi se vahaan ganga gautami (godavari) ke nam se prasiddh hueean aur bhagavan shiv ka jyotirliang bhi tryambak nam se vikhyat hua. yah tryambak jyotirliang samast papoan ka kshay karane vala hai. usi din se jab-jab brihaspati ka sianh rashi par padarpan hota hai, tab-tab sabhi tirth, kshetr, devata, pushkar adi sarovar, ganga adi shreshth nadiyaan, bhagavan vishnu adi devagan gautami ke tat par ate haian aur vahian nivas karate haian.

jitane dinoan tak ve gautami ke tat par nivas karate haian, utane dinoan tak unake moolasthan par koee phal nahian prapt hota hai. is prakar gautami tat par sthit is tryambak jyotirliang ka jo manushy bhaktibhavapoorvak darshan poojan karata hai, vah samast papoan se mukt ho jata hai. rrishi gautam dvara poojit yah tryambak jyotirliang is lok mean manushy ke samast abhisht phaloan ko pradan karata hai aur paralok mean uttam moksh pad ko dene vala hai–
