mahayan bauddh dharm ki ek pramukh shakha hai, jisaka arnbh pahali shatabdi ke as-pas mana jata hai. eesa poorv pahali shatabdi men vaishali men bauddh sngiti huee, jisamen pashchimi aur poorvi bauddh prithakh ho ge. poorvi shakha ka hi age chalakar 'mahayan' nam pada. bhakti aur pooja ki bhavana ke karan isaki or log saralata se akrisht hue. mahayan mat ke pramukh vicharakon men ashvaghosh, nagarjun aur asng ke nam pramukh hain.

shuruat

'mahayan' shabd ka vastavik arth isake do khandon (maha+yan) se spasht ho jata hai. 'yan' ka arth marg aur 'maha' ka shreshth , bada ya prashast samajha jata hai. mahayan buddh ki pooja karata hai. ye theravadiyon ko "hinayan" (chhoti gadi) kahate hain. bauddh dharm ki ek pramukh shakha hai, jisaka arnbh pahali shatabdi ke as-pas mana jata hai. eesa poorv pahali shatabdi men bauddh sngiti sampann huee thi, jisamen poorvi shakha alag ho gee thi. isi shakha ka age chalakar 'mahayan' nam pada.

prachar-prasar

desh ke dakshini bhag men is mat ka prasar dekhakar kuchh vidvanon ki manyata hai ki is vicharadhara ka arnbh usi anchal se hua. mahayan bhakti pradhan mat hai. isi mat ke prabhav se buddh ki moortiyon ka nirman anrabh hua. isi ne bauddh dharm men bodhisatv ki bhavana ka samavesh kiya. yah bhavana sadachar, paropakar, udarata adi se sampann thi. is mat ke anusar 'buddhatv' ki prapti sarvopari lakshy hai. mahayan snpraday ne grihasthon ke lie bhi samajik unnati ka marg nirdisht kiya.

shiksha

'shikshasamuchchay' namak granth men bodhisatv ke kartavy ka ullekh milata hai, jisaka tatpary yah hai ki grihasth ko vaisa hi karana chahie. mahayan-matavalambiyon ka kathan tha ki grihasthon men dan ki bhavana trishna, bhay, chinta ko door karati hai. atev grihasth ko atyadhik dan dena chahie. samajik prani ko samachit hona chahie. gyan prapti ke uchit marg ka avalamban tatha ananatvacharit (jo kisi men vibhed utpann n kare) ki bhavana avashyak hai. grihasth ko putr ka shatru manana chahie, kyonki vah atyadhik prem tatha akarshan ka patr hai. isi ke karan pita buddh vachan se vimukh ho jata hai. prem uchit marg se prithakh kar deta hai. grihasth men sam bhavana honi chahie tatha grihi bodhisatv kisi bhi padarth ko apana n samajhe. use sansarik vastuon ko tyagana chahie, taki mrityu ke samay vah trishnarahit sukh ka anubhav kare.

lokapriyata

'mahayan' dharm, bhakti tatha pooja ki bhavana se janata men lokapriy hota gaya tatha log usaki or akarshit hote gaye. buddh tatha bodhisatv ki pooja ka arambh hua aur kala men lakshan ke sthan par buddh tatha bodhisatv ki pratimaen taiyar hone lagin. gandhar shaili men bauddhamoorti nirmit hone lagin. buddh ko yogi aur bhikshu ke roop men tatha bodhisatv ko rajakumar ke vesh men (vastralnkarayukt) dikhalaya gaya. shung yug ki kala men buddh ke nana pratik pradhan sthan prapt kar chuke the. bharahut, bodhagaya tatha sanchi ki kala lakshanik thi. kanishk ke samay gandhar men sarvapratham buddhamoorti banane lagi. kumarasvami ka mat hai ki gandhar tatha mathura ke kala kendr men buddh pratima ka nirman svatntr roop se hua. donon shailiyon men kisi ka prabhav drishtigochar nahin hota. bhagavan buddh ki pratimaen dhyan tatha buddhatatvaprapti avastha men dikhalayi gayi hain. saranath men buddh ne 'dharmachakrapravartan' kiya tha, atev dharmachakr ko hatakar bhagavan dvara panch sadhuon ko dikshit karane ka drishy pratima ke dvara pradarshit kiya gaya.
