sujata soch rahi thi. aj amavasya hai. amavasya to usake hriday men savere se hi andhakar bhar rahi thi. din ka alok usake lie nahin ke barabar tha. vah apane vishrinkhal vicharon ko chhodakar kahan bhag jay. shikariyon ka jhund aur akeli harini! usaki ankhen band thin.

aryamitr khada raha. usane dekh liya ki sujata ki samadhi abhi n khulegi. vah muskurane laga. usake kritrim shil ne bhi usako varjit kiya. sngh ke niyamon ne usake hriday par kode lagaye; par vah bhikshu vahin khada raha.

bhitar ke andhakar se oobakar sujata ne alok ke lie ankhe khol din. aryamitr ko dekhakar alok ki bhishanata usaki ankhon ke samane nachane lagi. usane shakti batorakar kaha-‘‘vande!’’

aryamitr purush tha. bhikshuki ka usake samane nat hona sngh ka niyam tha. aryamitr ne hnsate hue abhivadan ka uttar diya, aur poochha-‘‘sujata, aj tum svasth ho?’’

sujata uttar dena chahati thi. par....aryamitr ke kashay ke navin rng men usaka man ulajh raha tha. vah chahati thi ki aryamitr chala jay; chala jay usaki chetana ke ghere ke bahar. idhar vah asvasth thi, aryamitr use aushadhi deta tha. sngh ka vah vaidy tha. ab vah achchhi ho gayi hai. use aryamitr ki avashyakata nahin. kintu .... hai to .... hriday ko upachar ki atyant avashyakata hai. tab bhi aryamitr! vah kya kare. bolana hi pada.

‘‘han, ab to svasth hoon.’’

‘‘abhi pathy sevan karana hoga.’’

‘‘achchha.’’

‘‘mujhe aur bhi ek bat kahani hai.’’

‘‘kya? nahin, kshama kijie. apane kab se pravrajya li hai?’’

‘‘vah sunakar tum kya karogi? snsar hi du:khamay hai.’’

‘‘thik to.......achchha, namaskar .’’

aryamitr chala gaya; kintu usake jane se jo andolan alok-tarng men utha, usi men sujata jhoomane lagi thi. use maloom nahin, kab se mahasthavir usake samip khade the.

‘‘jivan saty hai, samvedan saty hai, atma ke alok men andhakar kuchh nahin hai.’’

‘‘sujata, yah kya kah rahi ho?’’ pichhe se aryamitr ne kaha.

‘‘kaun, aryamitr!’’

‘‘main bhikshuni kyon huee aryamitr!’’

‘‘vyarth sujata. mainne amavasya ki gambhir rajani men sngh ke sammukh papi hona svikar kar liya hai. apane kritrim shil ke avaran men surakshit nahin rah saka. mainne mahasthavir se kah diya ki snghamitr ka putr aryamitr sansarik vibhootiyon ki upeksha nahin kar sakata. kee purushon ki sanchit mahaushadhiyan, kaling ke rajavaidy pad ka samman, sahaj men chhoda nahin ja sakata. main keval sujata ke lie hi bhikshu bana tha. usi ka pata lagane ke lie main is nil vihar men aya tha. vah meri vagdatta bhavi patni hai.’’

‘‘kintu aryamitr, tumane vilamb kiya, main tumhari patni n ho sakoongi.’’-sujata ne bich hi mnau rokakar kaha.

‘‘kyon sujata! yah kashay kya shrinkhala hai? phenk do ise. varanasi ke svarn-khachit vasan hi tumhare paridhan ke lie upayukt hain. ratnamala, mani-knkan aur hem-kanchi tumhari kamal-komal ang-lata ko sajavegi. tum-rajarani banogi.’’

‘‘kintu.....’’

‘‘kintu kya sujata? mera hriday phata jata hai. bolo, main sngh ka bandhan tod chuka hoon aur tum bhi to jivan ki, atma ki kshanikata men vishvas nahin karati ho?’’

‘‘kintu aryamitr! main vah amooly upahar-jo striyan, kulavadhuen apane pati ke charanon men samarpan karati hain-kahan se laoongi? vah varamala jisamen doorva-sadrish kaumayry hara-bhara rahata ho, jisamen madhook-kusum-sa hriday-ras bhara ho, kaise, kahan se tumhen pahana sakoongi?’’

‘‘kyon sujata? usamen kaun-si badha hai?-kahate-kahate aryamitr ka svar kuchh tikshn ho gaya. vah angoothe se baloo bikherane laga!

‘‘use sunakar tum kya karoge? jao, raj-sukh bhogo. mujh janm ki dukhiya ke pichhe apana anandapoorn bhavishy-snsar nasht n karo, aryamitr! jab tumane sngh ka bandhan bhi tod diya hai, tab mujh pamari ke moh ka bandhan bhi tod dalo.’’

sujata ke vaksh men shvas bhar raha tha.

aryamitr ne nirjan samudr-tat ke us malin saynkal men, sujata ka hath pakadakar tivr svar men poochha-‘‘sujata, spasht kaho; kya tum mujhase prem nahin karati ho?’’

‘‘karati hoon aryamitr! isi ka du:kh hai. nahin to bhairavi ke lie kis upabhog ki kami hai?’’

aryamitr ne chaunkakar sujata ka hath chhodate hue kaha-‘‘kya kaha, bhairavi!’’

‘‘han aryamitr. main bhairavi hoon, meri....’’

age vah kuchh n kah saki. ankhon se jal-bindu dhulak rahe the, jisamen vedana ke samudr oormil ho rahe the.

aryamitr adhir hokar sochane laga-‘‘parivarik pavitr bandhanon ko todakar jis mukti ki-nirvan ki-asha men janata daud rahi hai, us dharm ki yahi sima hai. yah andher-grihasthon ka sukh n dekh sakanevalon ka yah nirmam dand, samaj kab tak bhogega?’’

sahasa prakritisth hokar usane kaha-‘‘sujata! mera sir ghoom raha hai, jaise devarath ka chakr, parantu main tumako ab bhi patni-roop se grahan karoonga. sujata, chalo.’’

‘‘kintu main tumhen patiroop se grahan n kar sakoongi. apani sari lanchhana tumhare sath bantakar jivan-sngini banane ka dussahas main n kar sakoongi. aryamitr, mujhe kshama karo! meri vedana rajani se bhi kali hai aur du:kh samudr se bhi vistrit hai. smaran hai? isi mahodadhi ke tat par baithakar, sikata men ham log apana nam sath-hi-sath likhate the. chir-rodanakari nishthur samudr apani laharon ki ungali se use mita deta tha. mit jane do hriday ki sikata se prem ka nam! aryamitr, is rajani ke andhakar men use vilin ho jane do.’’

‘‘sujata’’-sahasa ek kathor svar sunaee pada.

usake jivan men paramanu bikhar rahe the. nisha ki kalima men sujata sir jhukaye hue baithi, dev-pratima ki rathayatra ka samaroh dekh rahi thi; kintu daudakar chhip janevale mook drishy ke saman vah kisi ko samajh n pati thi. sthavir ne usake samane akar kaha-‘‘sujata, tumane prayashchit kiya?’’

‘‘kisake pap ka prayashchit! tumhare ya apane?’’-tivr svar men sujata ne kaha!

‘‘apane aur aryamitr ke papon ka, sujata! tumane avishvasi hriday se dharmadroh kiya hai.’’

‘‘dharmadroh? ashchary!!’’

‘‘tumhara sharir devata ko samarpit tha, sujata. tumane.....’’

bich hi men use rokakar tivr svar men sujata ne kaha-‘‘chup raho, asatyavadi. vajrayani nar-pishach ....’’

ek kshan men is bhishan manushy ki kritrim shanti vilin ho gayi. usane dant kitakitakar kaha-‘‘mrityu-dand!’’

sujata ne usaki or dekhate hue kaha-‘‘kathor se bhi kathor mrityu-dand mere lie komal hai. mere lie is snehamayi dharani par bacha hi kya hai? sthavir! tumhara dharmashasan gharon ko choor-choor karake viharon ki srishti karata hai-kuchakr men jivan ko phnsata hai. pavitr garhasth bandhanon ko todakar tum log bhi apani vasana-tripti ke anukool hi to ek naya ghar banate ho, jisaka nam badal dete ho. tumhari trishna to sadharan saral grihasthon se bhi tivr hai, kshudr hai aur nimn koti ki hai.’’

‘‘kintu sujata, tumako marana hoga!’’

‘‘to maroongi sthavir; kintu tumhara yah kalpanik adambarapoorn dharm bhi marega. manushyata ka nash karake koee dharm khada nahin rah sakata.’’

‘‘kal hi!’’

‘‘han, kal prabhat men tum dekhoge ki sujata kaise marati hai!’’

sujata mandir ke vishal stambh se tiki huee, ratrivyapi utsav ko sthir drishti se dekhati rahi. ek bar usane dhire se poochha-

‘‘devata, yah utsav kyon? kya jivan ki yantranaon se tumhari pooja ka upakaran sngrah kiya jata hai?’’

pratima ne koee uttar nahin diya.

prabhat ki kiranen mandir ke shikhar par hnsane lagin.

dev-vigrah ne rath-yatra ke lie prayan kiya. janata tumulanad se jay-ghosh karane lagi.

sujata ne dekha, pujariyon ke dal men kaushey vasan pahane hue aryamitr bhi bhaktibhav se chala ja raha hai. usaki ichchha huee ki aryamitr ko bula kar kahe ki vah usake sath chalane ko prastut hai.

sampoorn bal se usane pukara-‘‘aryamitr!’’

kintu us kolahal men kaun sunata hai? devarath vistirn raj-path se chalane laga. usake dridh chakr dharani ki chhati men gahari lik dalate hue age badhऩe lage. us jan-samudr men sujata phand padi aur ek kshan men usaka sharir devarath ke bhishan chakr se pis utha.

rath khada ho gaya. sthavir ne sthir drishti se sujata ke shav ko dekha. abhi vah kuchh bolana hi chahata tha ki darshakon aur pujariyon ka dal, ‘‘kala pahad! kala pahad!!’’ chillata hua idhar-udhar bhagane laga. dhooli ki ghata men barachhiyon ki bijaliyan chamakane lagin.

dev-vigrah ekaki dharmonmatt ‘kala pahad’ ke ashvarohiyon se ghir gaya-rath par tha dev-vigrah aur niche sujata ka shav.
