ek din chandradev ke pas baithane valon ne suna ki vah kahin bahar janevala hai. doosare din chandradev ki stri-bhakti ki charcha chhidi. sab log kahane lage-‘‘chandradev kitana udar, sahriday vyakti hai. stri ke svasthy ke lie kaun itana rupaya kharch karake pahad jata hai. kam-se-kam ... nagar men to koee bhi nahin.’’

chandradev ne bahut gambhirata se mitron men kaha-‘‘bhaee, kya karoon, malati ko jab yakshma ho gaya hai, tab to pahad liva jana anivary hai. rupaya-paisa to ata-jata rahega.’’ sab logon ne isaka samarthan kiya.

chandradev pahad chalane ko prastut hua. vivash hokar malati ko bhi jana hi pada. lok-laj bhi to kuchh hai. aur jab ki sammanapoorvak pati apana kartavy palan kar raha ho to stri asvikar kaise kar sakati?

ek din malati chid ke vriksh ki chhaya men baithi huee badalon ki daud-dhoop dekh rahi thi aur man-hi-man vichar kar rahi thi chandradev ke seva-abhinay par. sahasa usaka ji bhar aya. vah pahadi rngin sandhya ki tarah kisi manasik vedana se lal-pili ho uthi. use apane oopar krodh aya. usi samay chandradev ne jo usase kuchh door baitha tha, pukar kar kaha-‘‘malati, ab chalo n! thak gayi ho n!’’

‘‘vahin samane to pahunchana hai, tumhen jaldi ho to chale jao, ‘booti’ ko bhej do, main usake sath chali aoongi.’’

‘‘achchha’’, kahakar chandradev agyakari anuchar ki tarah chala. vah tanik bhi virodh karake apane sneh-pradarshan men kami karana nahin chahata tha. malati avichal baithi rahi. thodi der men booti ayi; parantu malati ko usake ane men vilamb samajh pada. vah isake pahale bhi pahunch sakati thi. malati ke lie pahadi yuvati booti, paricharika ke roop men rakh li gee thi. yah nati-si gol-matol stri gend ki tarah uchhalati chalati thi. bat-bat par hnsati aur phir us hnsi ko chhipane ka prayatn karati rahati. booti ne kaha-

‘‘chalie, ab to kiranen doob rahi hain, aur mujhe bhi kam nipatakar chhutti par jana hai.’’

‘‘chhutti!’’ ashchary se jhallakar malati ne kaha.

‘‘han, ab main kam n karoongi!’’

‘‘kyon? tujhe kya ho gaya booti!’’

‘‘mera byah isi mahine men ho jayaga.’’-kahate hue us svatantr yuvati ne hns diya. ‘van ki harini apane ap jal men phnsane kyon ja rahi hai?’ malati ko ashchary hua. usane chalate-chalate poochha-‘‘bhala, tujhe doolha kahan mil gaya?’’

‘‘oho, tab ap kya janen ki ham logon ke byah ki bat pakki hue ath baras ho gaye? niladhar chala gaya tha, lakhanoo kamane, aur mainne bhi har sal yahin naukari karake kuchh-n-kuchh yahi panch sau rupaye bacha lie hain. ab vah bhi ek hazar aur gahane lekar parason pahunch jayaga. phir ham log oonche pahad par apane ganv men chale jaynge. vahin ham logon ka ghar basega. kheti kar loongi. bal-bachchon ke lie bhi to kuchh chahie. phir chahie budhape ke lie , jo in pahadon men kashtapoorn jivan-yatra ke lie atyant avashyak hai.’’

vah prasannata se baten karati, uchhalati huee chali ja rahi thi aur malati hanphane lagi thi. malati ne kaha-‘‘to kyon daudi ja rahi hai? abhi hi tera doolha nahin mila ja raha hai.’’

kamare men donon or palng bichhe the. machchharadani men do vyakti sone ka abhinay kar rahe the. chandradev soch rahe the-‘yah booti! apani kamaee se ghar basane ja rahi hai. kitana pragadh prem in donon men hoga? aur malati! bina kuchh hath-pair hilaye-dulaye apani sampoorn shakti se nishkriy pratirodh karati huee, sukhabhog karane par bhi asantusht!’ chandradev tha tarkik. vah sochane laga, ‘tab kya mujhe ise prasann karane ki cheshta chhod deni chahie? mare chahe jiye! mainne kya nahin kiya isake lie, phir bhi bhaunhen chadhi hi rahen, to main kya karoon? mujhe kya milata hai is hridayahin bojh ko dhone se! bas, ab main ghar chaloonga. phir-malati ke .... bad ek doosari stri. are! vah kitani agyakarini-kintu kya yah mar jayagi! manushy kitana svarthi hai. phir main hi kyon nahin mar jaoon. kintu pahale kaun mare? mere mar jane par vah jiti rahegi. isake lie log kitane tarah ke kalnk, kitani buraee ki baten sochenge. aur yahi jane kya kar baithe! tab ise to lajjit hona hi padega. mujhe bhi svarg men kitana apaman bhogana padega! malati ke marane par lokapavad se mukt main doosara byah karoonga. aur pativrata malati svarg men bhi meri shubh-kamana karegi. to phir yahi thik raha. man ki raksha ke lie log kitane bade-bade balidan kar chuke hain. kya main unaka anukaran nahin kar sakata! malati samman ki vedi par bali chadhe. vahi-pahale mare-phir dekha jayaga! ram ki tarah ek patnivrat kar sakoonga, to kar loonga, nahin to unhoon-’

chandradev ki khuli ankhon ke samane machchharadani ke jalidar kapade par ek chitr khincha-ek yuvati muskarati huee chay ki pyali badha rahi hai. chandradev ne n pine ki soochana pahale hi de di thi. phir bhi usake anunay men badi taravat thi. us yuvati ke rom-rom kahate the, ‘le lo!’

chandradev yah svapn dekhakar nishchint so gaya. usane apane banavati upachar ka-seva-bhav ka ant kar liya tha.

doosari machchharadani men thaki huee malati thi. sone ke pahale use apane hi oopar rosh a gaya tha-‘vah kyon n aisi huee ki chandradev usake charanon men lotata, usake man ko, usake pranayarosh ko dhire-dhire sahalaya karata! tab kya vaisi hone ki cheshta kare; kintu ab karake kya hoga? jab yauvan ka ullas tha, kusum men makarand tha, chandani par megh ki chhaya n thi, tab n kar saki, to ab kya? booti sadharan majoori karake svasth, sundar, akarshan aur adar ki patr ban sakati hai. usaka yauvan dhalaven path ki or munh kiye hai, phir bhi usamen kitana ullas hai!

‘yah atm-vishvas! yahi to jivan hai; kintu, kya main pa sakati hoon! kya mere ang phir se gudagude ho jayenge. lali daud avegi? hriday men uchchhrinkhal ullas, hnsi se bhara anand nachane lagega?’ usane ek bar apane durbal hathon ko uthakar dekha ki choodiy़an kalaee se bahut niche khisak ayi thin. sahasa use smaran hua ki vah booti se abhi do baras chhoti hai. do baras men vah svasth, sundar, hrisht-pusht aur hnsamukh ho sakati hai, hokar rahegi. vah maregi nahin. na, kabhi nahin, chandradev ko doosare ka n hone degi. vichar karate-karate phir so gayi.

savere donon machchharadaniyan uthin. chandradev ne malati ko dekha-vah prasann thi. usake kapolo ka rng badal gaya tha. use bhram hua, ‘kya?’ usane ankhen michamichakar phir dekha! is kriya par malati hns padi. chandradev jhallakar uth baitha. vah kahana chahata tha ki ‘‘main chalana chahata hoon. rupaye ka abhav hai! kab tak yahan pahad par pada rahoonga? tumhara achchha hona asambhav hai. majoorani bhi chhodakar chali gayi. aur bhi anek asuvidhaen hain. main to chaloonga.’’

parantu vah kah n paya. kuchh soch raha tha. nishthur prahar karane men hichak raha tha. sahasa malati pas chali ayi. machchharadani uthakar muskarati huee boli-‘‘chalo, ghar chalen! ab to main achchhi hoon?’’

chandradev ne ashchary se dekha ki-malati durbal hai-kintu rog ke lakshan nahin rahe. usake ang-ang par svabhavik rng prasannata banakar khel raha tha!
