choodivali ka nam tha vilasini. vah nagar ki ek prasiddh nartaki ki kanya thi. usake roop aur sngit-kala ki sukhyati thi, vaibhav bhi kam n tha! vilas aur pramod ka paryapt sambhar milane par bhi use santosh n tha. hriday men koee abhav khatakata tha, vastav men usaki manovritti usake vyavasay ke pratikool thi.

choodivali ne samajha ki usaki poorn vijay huee, par bat kuchh doosari thi. vijayakrishn ka vah ek vinod tha. jab sab kuchh chala gaya, tab vinod lekar kya hoga. ek din choodivali se chhutti mangi. usane kaha-‘‘kami kis bat ki hai, main tumhari hi hoon aur sab vibhav bhi tumhara hai.’’ vijayakrishn ne kaha-‘‘main veshya ki di huee jivika se pet palane men asamarth hoon.’’ choodivali bilakhane lagi, vinay kiya, roee, gidagidaee par vijayakrishn chale hi gaye! vah sochane lagi ki-‘‘apana vyavasay aur vijay ki grihasthi bigadakar jo sukh kharida tha, usaka koee mooly nahin. main kulavadhoo hone ke upayukt nahin. kya samaj ke pas isaka koee pratikar nahin? itani tapasya aur itana svarth-tyag vyarth hai?’’

parantu vilasini yah n janati thi ki stri aur purush-sambandhi samast antim nirnay karane men samaj kitana hi udar kyon n ho; donon pakshon ko sarvatha santusht nahin kar saka aur n kar sakane ki asha hai. yah rahasy srishti ko ulajha rakhane ki kunji hai.

sandhya ho chali thi. pakheruon ka basere ki or lautane ka kolahal macha aur vat-vriksh men chahal-pahal ho gee. choodivali charani ke pas khadi bailon ko dekh rahi thi. dalan men dipak jal raha tha, andhakar usake ghar aur man men barajori ghus raha tha. kolahal-shoony jivan men bhi choodivali ko shanti mili, aisa vishvas nahin hota tha. pas hi usaki pinduliyon se sir ragadata hua kalua dum hila raha tha. sukhiya usake lie ghar men se kuchh khane ko le ayi thi; par kalua udhar n dekhakar apani svamini se sneh jata raha tha. choodivali ne hnsate hue kaha-‘‘chal, tera dular ho chuka. ja, kha le.’’ choodivali ne man men socha, kngal manushy sneh ke lie kyon bhikh mangata hai.? vah svayn nahin karata, nahin to trin-virudh tatha pashu-pakshi bhi to sneh karane ke lie prastut hain. itane men nandoo ne akar kaha-‘‘man, ek batohi bahut thaka hua abhi aya hai. bhookh ke mare vah jaise shithil ho gaya hai.’’

‘‘toone kyon nahin de diya?’’

‘‘leta bhi nahin, kahata hai, too bada garib ladaqa hai, tujhase n loonga.’’

choodivali vat-vriksh ki or chal padi. andhera ho gaya tha. pathik jad ka sahara lekar leta tha. choodivali ne hath jodakar kaha-‘‘maharaj, ap kuchh bhojan kijie.’’

‘‘tum kaun ho?’’

‘‘pahale ki ek veshya.’’

‘‘chhi:, mujhe pade rahane do, main nahin chahata ki tum mujhase bolo bhi, kyonki tumhara vyavasay kitane hi sukhi gharon ko ujadakar shmashan bana deta hai.’’

‘‘maharaj, ham log to kala ke vyavasayi hain. yah aparadh kala ka mooly laganevalon ki kuruchi aur kutsit ichchha ka hai. snsar men bahut-se nirlajj svarthapoorn vyavasay chalate hain. phir isi par itana krodh kyon?’’

‘‘kyonki vah un sabon men adham aur nikrisht hai.’’

‘‘parantu veshya ka vyavasay karake bhi mainne ek hi vyakti se prem kiya tha. main aur dharm nahin janati, par apane sarakar se jo kuchh mujhe mila, use main lok-seva men lagati hoon. mere talab par koee bhookha nahin rahane pata. meri jivika chahe jo rahi ho, mere atithi-dharm men badha n dijie.’’

pathik ek bar hi uthakar baith gaya aur ankh gadakar andhere men dekhane laga. sahasa bol utha-‘‘choodivali?’’

‘‘kaun, sarakar?’’

‘‘han, tumane shok har liya. mere aparadhajanak tamam tyag men puny ka bhi bhag tha, yah main nahin janata.’’

‘‘sarakar! mainne grihasth-kulavadhoo hone ke lie kathor tapasya ki hai. in char varshon men mujhe vishvas ho gaya hai ki kulavadhoo hone men jo mahatv hai, vah seva ka hai, n ki vilas ka.’’

‘‘seva hi nahin, choodivali! usamen vilas ka anant yauvan hai, kyonki keval stri-purush ke sharirik bandhan men vah paryavasit nahin hai, bahy sadhanon ke vikrit ho jane tak hi, usaki sima nahin, garhasthy jivan usake lie prachur upakaran prastut karata hai, isalie vah prey bhi hai aur shrey bhi hai. mujhe vishvas hai ki tum ab saphal ho jaogi.’’

‘‘meri saphalata apaki kripa par hai. vishvas hai ki ab itane nirday n honge’’-kahate-kahate choodivali ne sarakar ke pair pakad liye.
