jab anek prarthana karane par yahan tak ki apani samast upasana aur bhakti ka pratidan mangane par bhi ‘kunjabihari’ ki pratima n pighali, komal pranon par daya n ayi, ansuon ke aghry dene par bhi n pasiji, aur kunjanath kisi prakar devata ko prasann n kar sake, bhayanak shikari ne sarala ke pran le hi liye, kintu pashani pratima achal rahi, tab bhi usaka rag-bhog usi prakar chalata raha; shnkh, ghanta aur dipamala ka ayojan yatha-niyam hota raha. keval kunjanath tab se mandir ki phulavari men patthar par baithakar hath jodakar chala ata. ‘‘kunjabihari’’ ke samaksh jane ka sahas nahin hota. n jane moorti men use vishvas hi kam ho gaya tha ki apani shraddha ki, vishvas ki durbalata use snkuchit kar deti.

aj chandani nikhar rahi thi. chandr ke manohar mukh par rijhakar sur-balaen tarak-kusum ki varsha kar rahi thin. snigdh malayanil pratyek kusum-stavak ko choomakar mandir ki anek malaon ko hila deta tha. kunj patthar par baitha hua sab dekh raha tha. manohar madanamohan moorti ki seva karane ko chitt uttejit ho utha. kunjanath ne seva, pujari ke hath se le li. badi shraddha se pooja karane laga. chandi ki arati lekar jab dev-vigrah ke samane yuvak kunjanath khada hua, akasmath manasik vritti palati aur sarala ka mukh smaran ho aya. kunjabihari ji ki pratima ke mukh-mandal par usane apani drishti jamayi.

‘‘main anant kal tak tarngon ka aghat, varsha, pavan, dhoop, dhool se tatha manushyon ke apaman shlagha se bachane ke lie giri-garbh men chhipa pada raha, moorti meri thi ya main svayn moorti tha, yah sambandh vyakt nahin tha. nishthur lauh-astr se jab katakar main alag kiya gaya, tab kisi prani ne apani samast sahridayata mujhe arpan ki, usaki chetavani mere pashan men mili, atmanubhav ki tivr vedana yah sab mujhe milate rahe, mujhamen vibhram tha, vilas tha, shakti thi. ab to pujari bhi vetan pata hai aur main bhi usi ke avashisht se apana nirvah......’’

aur bhi kya moorti kah rahi thi, kintu shnkh aur ghanta bhayanak svar se baj uthe. svami ko dekh kar pujari logon ne dhatu-patron ko aur bhi veg se bajana arambh kar diya. kunjanath ne arati rakh di. door se koee gata hua ja raha tha:

‘‘sach kah doon ai birahaman gar too bura n mane.

tere sanamakade ke but ho gaye purane.’’

kunjanath ne sthir drishti se dekha, moorti men vah saundary nahin, vah bhakti sphurit karane vali kanti nahin. vah lalit bhav-lahari ka avirbhav-tirobhav mukh-mandal se jane kahan chala gaya hai. dhairy chhodakar kunjanath chala aya. pranam bhi nahin kar saka.

‘‘kahan jati hai?’’

‘‘man aj shivaji ki pooja nahin ki.’’

‘‘beti, tujhe kal rat se jvar tha, phir is samay jakar kya nadi men snan karegi?’’

‘‘han, main bina pooja kiye jal n piyoongi.’’

‘‘rajani, too badi hathili hoti ja rahi hai. dharm ki aisi kadi agya nahin hai ki vah svasthy ko nasht karake palan ki jay.’’

‘‘man, mere gale se jal n utarega. ek bar vahan tak jaoongi.’’

‘‘too kyon itani tapasya kar rahi hai?’’

‘‘too kyon padi-padi roya karati hai?’’

‘‘tere lie.’’

‘‘aur main bhi pooja karati hoon tere lie ki tera rona chhoot jay’’- itana kahakar kalasi lekar rajani chal padi.’’

‘‘manushy itana patit kabhi n hota, yadi samaj use n bana deta. main ab is knkal samaj se koee sambandh n rakkhoonga. jisake sath sneh karo, vahi kapat rakhata hai. jise apana samajho, vahi katarani liye rahata hai. oh, ham vidvesh karake itane koohrar bana diye gaye hain, hamen logon ne bura bana diya hai. apane svarth ke lie, ham kadapi itane dusht nahin ho sakate the. hamari shuddh atma men kisane vish mila diya hai, kalushit kar diya hai, kisane kapat, chaturi, pravanchana sikhayi hai? isi paishachik samaj ne, ise chhodऩa hoga. kisi se sambandh hi n rahega, to phir vidvesh ka mool hi n rah jayaga. chalo, aj se ise tilanjali de do. bas ....’’ yuvak kunjanath amr-kanan ke kone par se sandhya ke akash ko dekhate hue kah raha tha. lata ki ad se nikalati huee rajani ne kaha-‘‘hain! hain! kise chhodate ho?’’

kunjanath ne ghoomakar dekha ki unaki svargiy stri ki bhagini rajani kalasi liye a rahi hai. kunjanath ki bhavana prabal ho uthi. aj bahut dinon par rajani dikhaee padi hai. daridra sas ko kunjanath badi anadar ki drishti se dekhate the. usase kabhi milana bhi apani pratishtha ke viruddh samajhate the. jab se sarala ka dehant hua, tab se aur bhi. daridr-kanya se byah karake unhen samaj men sir nicha karana pada tha. is pap ka phal rajani ki man ko bina diye, bina pratishodh liye kunjanath ko chain nahin. rajani jab balika thi, kee bar bahan ke pas baith kar kunjanath se saral vinod kar chuki thi. aj usake man men us balika-sulabh chanchaly ka uday ho gaya. vah bol uthi-‘‘kunj baboo! kise chhodऩa chahate ho?’’

rajani ne kaha-‘‘shiv-poojan karake a rahi hoon.’’

kunj ne poochha-‘‘tumhare shivaji kahan hain?’’

rajani-‘‘yahin nadi ke kinare.’’

kunj-‘‘main bhi dekhoonga.’’

rajani-‘‘chalie.’’

donon nadi ki or chale. yuvak ne dekha bhagn-mandir ka nagn devata-n to vastr hain, n alnkar, n chandi ke patr hain, n javaharat ki chamak. keval shyamal moorti par hare-hare vilvadal aur chhota-sa dipak ka prakash. kunjanath ko bhakti ka udrek hua. devamoorti ke samane usane jhukakar pranam kiya.

kshan bhar men ashchary se kunj ne dekha ki svargiy sarala ki pratima rajani, hath jode hai, aur vah shiv-pratima kunjabihari ho gayi hai.
