rani-‘‘main ketaki-van ki rani hoon.’’

‘‘tab aise kyon?’’

‘‘samay ki pratiksha men padi hoon.’’

‘‘kaisa samay?’’

‘‘ap se kya kam?’’ kya shikar khelane aye hain?’’

‘‘nahin devi! aj svayn shikar ho gaya hoon?’’

‘‘tab to ap shighr hi shahar ki or palatenge. kya kisi bhillani ke nayan-ban lage hain? kintu nahin, main bhool kar rahi hoon. un bechariyon ko kshudha-jvala ne jala rakkha hai. oh, vah gadhe men dhnsi huee ankhen ab kisi ko akarshit karane ka samathry nahin rakhatin. he bhagavan, main kisalie pahadi se utar kar ayi hoon.’’

‘‘devi! apaka abhipray kya hai, main samajh n saka. kya oopar akal hai, durbhiksh hai?’’

‘‘nahin-nahin, eeshvar ka prakop hai, pavitrata ka abhishap hai, karuna ki vibhats moorti ka darshan hai.’’

‘‘tab apaki kya ichchha hai?’’

‘‘main vahan ki rani hoon. mere vastr-abhooshan-bhandar men jo kuchh tha, sab bech kar tin mahine kisi prakar unhen khila saki, ab mere pas keval is vastr ko chhodakar aur kuchh nahin raha ki vikray karake ek bhi kshudhit pet ki jvala bujhati, isalie .....’’

‘‘kya?’’

‘‘shahar chaloongi. suna hai ki vahan roop ka bhi dam milata hai. yadi kuchh mil sake ..’’

‘‘tab?’’

‘‘to ise bhi bech doongi. anath balakon ko isase kuchh to sahayata pahunch sakegi. kyon, kya mera roop bikane yogy nahin hai?’’

yuvak ghanashyam isaka uttar dene men asamarth tha. kuchh din pahale vah apana sarvasv dekar bhi aisa roop kray karane ko prastut ho jata. aj vah apani stri ke viyog men bada hi sidha, dharmik, nirih evn paropakari ho gaya tha. art mumukshu ki tarah use n jane kis vastu ki khoj thi.

ghanashyam ne kaha-‘‘main kya uttar doon?’’

‘‘kyon? kya dam n lagega? han tum bhi aj kis vesh men ho? kya sochate ho? bolate kyon nahin?

‘‘meri stri ka sharirant ho gaya.’’

‘‘tab to achchha hua, tum nagar ke dhani ho. tumhen to roop ki avashyakata hoti hogi. kya ise kray karoge?’’

ghanashyam ne hath jodakar sir nicha kar liya. tab us rani ne kaha-‘‘us din to ek bhillani ke roop par marate the. kyon, aj kya hua?’’

‘‘devi, mera sahas nahin hai-vah pap ka veg tha.’’

‘‘chhi: pap ke lie sahas tha aur puny ke lie nahin?’’

ghanashyam ro pada aur bola-‘‘kshama kijiega. puny kis prakar sampadit hota hai, mujhe nahin maloom. kintu ise puny kahane men...’’

‘‘snkoch hota hai. kyon?’’

isi samay do-tin balak, char-panch striyan aur chh:-sat bhil anahar-klisht shirn kalevar pavan ke bal se hilate-dulate rani ke samane akar khade ho gaye.

rani ne kaha-‘‘kyon ab pap ki paribhasha karoge?’’

ghanashyam ne kanp kar kaha-‘‘nahin, prayashchit karoonga, us din ke pap ka prayashchit.’’

yuvak ghanashyam veg se uth khada hua, bola-‘‘bahin, tumane mere jivan ko avalamb diya hai. main niruddeshy ho raha tha, kartavy nahin soojh padata tha. apako kray-vikray n karana padega. devi! main sandhya tak a jaoonga.’’

‘‘sandhya tak?’’

‘‘aur bhi pahale.’’

balak rone lage-‘‘rani man, ab nahin rah jata.’’ ghanashyam se bhi nahin raha gaya, vah bhaga.

ghanashyam ki papabhoomi, dekhate-dekhate gadi aur chhakadon se bhar gayi, bazar lag gaya, rani ke prabandh men ghanashyam ne vahin par akal piditon ki seva arambh kar di.

jo ghatana use bar-bar smaran hoti thi, usi ka yah prayashchit tha. ghanashyam ne usi bhillani ko pradhan prabandh karane vali dekh kar ashchary kiya. use n jane kyon harsh aur utsah donon hue.
