prayag ka adhunik nam ilahabad hai. prayag uttar pradesh ka ek prachin tirthasthan hai jisaka nam ashvamedh adi anek yagy (ygy) adhik hone se pada tha. yah gnga-yamuna ke sngam par sthit hai tatha yahan ka snan triveni snan (donon nadiyon ki alag-alag tatha ek snyukt dhara- tin dharaon ke karan athava gnga, yamuna ke sath ant:salila sarasvati ke karan 'triveni') kaha jata hai. prayag ka muslim shasan men 'ilahabad' nam kar diya gaya tha parntu 'prayag' nam aj bhi prachalit hai. yahan uttar pradesh ka uchch nyayalay aur eji karyalay bhi hai. ramayan men ilahabad, prayag ke nam se varnit hai. aisa mana jata hai ki is sngam par bhoomigat roop se sarasvati nadi bhi akar milati hai. ilahabad ka ullekh bharat ke dharmik granthon men bhi milata hai. ved, puran, ramayan aur mahabharat men is sthan ko prayag kaha gaya hai. gnga, yamuna aur sarasvati nadiyon ka yahan sngam hota hai, isalie hinduon ke lie is shahar ka vishesh mahattv hai. inhen bhi dekhen: ilahabad, sngam, kumbh mela, gnga, yamuna evn sarasvati nadi

prayag ki vyutpatti

prayag shabd ki vyutpatti kee prakar se ki gayi hai. mahabharat men vanaparv men aya hai ki 'sabhi jivon ke adhish brahma ne yahan prachin kal men ygy kiya tha aur isi se 'yajh dhatu' se prayag bana hai.[1]

  • skandapuran ne ise 'pr' evn 'yag' se yukt mana hai[2]
  • pratham ansh skandapuran [3] men bhi aya hai. at: prayag ka arth hai 'yagebhy: prakrisht:', 'ygyon se badhakar jo hai' ya 'prakrishto yago yatr', 'jahan utkrisht ygy hai.' isalie kaha jata hai ki yah sabhi ygyon se uttam hai, hari, har adi devon ne ise 'prayag' nam diya hai.
  • matsyapuran ne 'pr' upasarg par bal diya hai aur kaha hai ki any tirthon ki tulana men yah adhik prabhavashali hai.

  • matsyapuran[5]; padmapuran [6]; koormapuran [7] ka kathan hai ki prayag ka vistar paridhi men panch yojan hai aur jyon hi koee us bhoomikhnd men pravisht hota hai, usake pratyek pad par ashvamedh ka phal hota hai.
  • tristhalisetu [8] men isaki vyakhya yon ki gee hai- 'yadi brahyayup[9] ko khoonti manakar koee dedh yojan rassi se charon or mape to vah panch yojan ki paridhi vala sthal prayagamndal hoga.
  • mahabharat vanaparv [10] , matsyapuran [11] adi ne prayag ke kshetraphal ki paribhasha di hai[12] 'prayag ka vistar pratishthan se vasuki ke jalashay tak hai aur kambal nag evn ashvatar nag tatha bahumoolak tak hai; yah tin lokon men prajapati ke pavitr sthal ke roop men vikhyat hai.
  • matsyapuran [13]ne kaha hai ki 'gnga ke poorv men samudrakoop hai, jo pratishthan hi hai.
  • tristhalisetu ne ise yon vyakhyat kiya hai- poorv sima pratishthan ka koop hai, uttar men vasukihnad hai, pashchim men kambal evn ashvatar hain aur dakshin men bahumoolak hai. in simaon ke bhitar prayag tirth hai.'
  • matsyapuran [14] ke mat se donon nag yamuna ke dakshini kinare par hain, kintu mudrit grnth men 'vipule yamunatate' path hai. kintu prakashit padmapuran [15] se pata chalata hai ki kalpataru ka pathantar (yamuna-dakshine tate) thik hai. veni kshetr prayag ke antargat hai aur vistar men 20 dhanu hai, jaisa ki padmapuran men aya hai.[16] yahan tin pavitr koop hain, yatha prayag, pratishthanapur evn alarkapur men.
  • matsyapuran evn agnipuran ka kathan hai ki yahan tin agnikund hain aur gnga unake madhy men bahati hai. jahan bhi kahin puranon men snan sthal ka varnan (vishisht snketon ko chhodakar) aya hai, usaka tatpary hai veni-sthal-snan aur veni ka tatpary hai donon (gnga evn yamuna) ka sngam.[17]
  • vanaparv evn kuchh puranon ke parv ke mat gnga evn yamuna ke bich ki bhoomi prithvi ke jangh hai arthath yah prithvi ki atyant samriddhashali bhoomi hai aur prayag jaghanon ki upasth bhoomi hai.[18]
  • narasinhapuran (63|17) ka kathan hai ki prayag men vishnu yogamoorti ke roop men hain.
  • matsyapuran (111|4-10) men aya hai ki kalp ke ant men jab rudr vishv ka nash kar dete hain, us samay bhi prayag ka nash nahin hota. brahma, vishnu evn maheshvar (shiv) prayag men rahate hain. pratishthan ke uttar men brahma gupt roop men rahate hain, vishnu vahan venimadhav ke roop men rahate hain aur shiv vahan akshayavat ke roop men rahate hain. isilie gndharvon ke sath devagan, siddh log evn bade-bade rishigan prayag ke mndal ko dusht karmon se bachate rahate hain.[19] isi se matsyapuran (104|18) men aya hai ki yatri ko devarakshit prayag men jana chahie, vahan ek mas thaharana chahie, vahan snbhog nahin karana chahie, devon evn pitaron ki pooja karani chahie aur vanchhit phal prapt karane chahie.
  • prayag ki sima pratishthan (jhoonsi) se vasuki setu tak tatha knbal aur ashvatar nagon tak sthit hai. yah tinon lokon men prajapati ki punyasthali ke nam se vikhyat hai.
  • padm puran[20] ke anusar 'veni' kshetr prayag ki sima men 20 dhanush tak ki doori men vistrit hai. vahan prayag, pratishthan (jhoonsi) tatha alarkapur (arail) nam ke tin koop hain. puranon[21] ke anusar vahan tin agnikund bhi hain jinake madhy se hokar gnga bahati hai. vanaparv[22] tatha matsy puran[23] men bataya gaya hai ki prayag men nity snan ko 'veni' arthath do nadiyon (gnga aur yamuna) ka sngam snan kahate hain. vanaparv[24] tatha any puranon men gnga aur yamuna ke madhy ki bhoomi ko prithvi ka jaghan ya katipradesh kaha gaya hai. isaka tatpary hai prithvi ka sabase adhik samriddh pradesh athava madhy bhag.[25]-

pauranik ullekh

prayag ka ullekh puranon men bhi anekon sthan par hua hai, jahan isake vishay men kee mahattvapoorn tathy diye hue hain[26]-

  • bhagavan vishnu ko prayag atipriy hai, jahan balaram aye the.[27] yahan yamuna ke uttari kinare par pururava ki rajadhani thi.[28] yahan shri lalitadevi ka mndir bhi hai.[29] yah shraddh ke lie upayukt sthan hai[30] kahate hain ki purush roopi ved ki yah nak hai.[31]
  • ek any prasnganusar prayag ko prasiddh tatha prachin tirth sthan bataya gaya hai, jo gnga-yamuna ke sngam par sthit hai. isaka kshetraphal 5 yojan hai, jahan jane se ashvamedh ygy ka phal milata hai. ramayan ke anusar yahan ke jal se prachin kal men rajaon ka abhishek hota tha. yahan prajapati kshetr hai, vahan snan karane vala svarg prapt karata hai tatha yahan marane vala vyakti bhavajal se mukt ho jata hai. indr isaki raksha karate hain. bharadvaj rishi ka ashram yahan par tha, jisake kuchh chihn abhi tak vartaman men hain. yahan soory putri yamuna sada rahati hain. yahan siddh, devata tatha rishiyon ka avas hai.[32] van jate samay shriramachndr yahan se hote hue ge the.
  • bauddh kal men prayag men bahut se vihar tatha math bane the. yahan ka 'akshayavat' bahut prachin kal se prasiddh hai. is tirth ke uttar men pratishthan ke roop men rakshak brahma, venimadhav ke roop men vishnu tatha akshayavat ke roop men shiv rakshak evn pap nivarak hain. matsyapuran ke 102 adhyay se 107 tak isi tirth ka mahatmy bhara pada hai, jisake anusar yah prajapati ka kshetr hai. yahan ke vat ki raksha svayn shoolapani karate hain aur yahan marane vala shivalok ka bhagi hota hai. kahate hain, magh mahine men yahan sab tirthon ka vas rahata hai, at: is mahine men yahan vas karane ka bahut phal likha hai, par yahan bailagadi par savar hokar nahin jana chahie. prayag ko 'tirtharaj' kaha gaya hai, jahan triveni men snan karane ka vishesh mahatmy hai, jisamen gnga, yamuna tatha sarasvati ka sngam hota hai.[33] yahan 60 karod 10,000 pavitr sthan hai, jinamen urvashiraman, sndhyavat, kotitirth adi pradhan hain[34] isase dakshin men rinamochan tirth hai, jo rin se mukti deta hai[35]
  • valmiki ramayan men prayag ka ka ullekh bharadvaj ke ashram ke sambandh men hai[36] aur is sthan par ghor van ki sthiti bataee gee hai-

'yatr bhagirathi gnga yamuna-bhipravartate jagmustn deshamuddishy vigahy samuhadvanamh. prayagamabhit: pashch saumitre ghoomamunamamh, agrerbhagavat: ketun manye snnihito muni:. dhanvinau to sukhn gatva lnbamane divakare, gngayamunayo: sndhau prapaturnilayn mune:. avakasho divikto yn mahanadyo: samagame, punyashcharamaniyashch vasatvih bhavanh sukhamh'[37] is varnan se soochit hota hai ki prayag men ramayan ki katha ke samay ghor jngal tatha muniyon ke ashram the, koee janasnkul basti nahin thi.

  • mahabharat men gnga-yamuna ke sngam ka ullekh tirth roop men avashy hai, kintu us samay bhi yahan kisi nagar ki sthiti ka abhas nahin milata-

'pavitramrishibhirjushtn punyn pavanamuttamam, gngayamunayorvir sngamn lok vishrutamh'[38] 'gnga yamunormavye snati y: sngamenar:, dashashvamedhanapnoti kuln chaiv samuddharet'[39] 'prayage devayaj ne devanan prithivipate, oopurapluty gatrani tapashchatastharuttamamh, gngayamunayo chaiv sngame satyasngara:'[40]

itihas

  • bauddh sahity men bhi prayag ka kisi bade nagar ke roop men varnan nahin milata, varanh bauddh kal men vatsadesh ki rajadhani ke roop men kaushanbi adhik prasiddh thi. ashok ne apana prasiddh prayag-stnbh kaushanbi men hi sthapit kiya tha. yadyapi bad men shayad mugal badashah akabar ke samay men vah prayag le aya gaya tha. isi stnbh par samudragupt ki prasiddh prayag-prashasti ankit hai. kalidas ne 'raghuvnsh' ke 13ven sarg men gnga-yamuna ke sngam ka manohari varnan kiya hai[41] tatha gnga-yamuna ke sngam ke snan ko muktidayak mana hai-

'samudr-patnyorjalasannipat pootatmanamatr kilabhishekath, tattvavabodhen vinapi bhooy: tanustyajan nasti sharirabndh:'[42]

'utsadyakhilakshatrajati navanaga: padyavasyan nam puryamanugngaprayag gayayashch magadha guptashch bhokshyanti'.
  • vishnupuran[43] se soochit hota hai ki is puran ke rachanakal[44] men prayag ki tirth roop men bahut manyata thi-
'prayage pushkare chaiv kurukshetre tayarnave kritopavas: prapnoti tadasy shravanannar:'.
  • chini yatri yuvanachvang ne kannaujadhip maharaj harsh ka prati panchaven varsh prayag ke mele men jakar sarvasv dan kar dene ka apoorv varnan kiya hai. uttarakalin puranon men prayag ke jis 'akshayavat' ka ullekh hai, use bahut samay tak sngam ke nikat akabar ke qile ke andar sthit bataya jata tha. yah bat ab galat siddh ho chuki hai aur asali vat vriksh kile se kuchh door sthit bataya jata hai. mahabharat men akshayavat ka gaya men hona varnit hai.[45] snbhav hai gautam buddh ke gaya sthit snbodhivriksh ke saman hi pauranik kal men akshayavat ki kalpana ki gee hogi.
  • kaha jata hai ki akabar ke samay men prayag ka nam 'ilahabad' kar diya gaya tha, kintu jan padata hai ki prayag ko akabar ke poorv bhi 'ilabas' kaha jata tha. ek pauranik katha ke anusar pratishthanapur athava jhoosi[46] men chndravnshi raja puru ki rajadhani thi. inake poorvaj pururava the, jo manu ki putri ila aur budh ke putr the.[47] ila ke nam par hi prayag ko 'ilabas' kaha jata tha. vastav men akabar ne isi nam ko thoda badalakar 'ilahabad' kar diya tha.
  • vats ya kaushanbi ka raja udayan jo prachin sahity men prasiddh hai, chndravnsh se hi snbndhit tha-isase bhi prayag men chndravnsh ke rajy karane ki pauranik katha ki pushti hoti hai aur is tathy ka bhi praman mil jata hai ki vastav men prayag ka ek prachin nam 'ilabas' bhi tha, jise akabar ne kuchh badal diya tha aur usaka uddeshy prayag nam ko hatakar 'allahabad' ya 'ilahabad' nam prachalit karana nahin tha. akabar ne sngam par sthit kisi poorvayugin qile ka jirnoddhar karake usaka vistar karavaya aur use vartaman sudridh kile ka roop diya. is tathy ki pushti tulasidas ke is varnan se bhi hoti hai, jisamen prayag men ek sudridh gadh ka varnan hai-
'kshetr agam gadh gadh suhava, sapanehu nahi pratipachchhahin pava'[48]
  • akabar ke samakalin itihas lekhak badayoonni ke vrittant se soochit hota hai ki is mugal samrat ne prayag men ek bade rajaprasad ki bhi ninv rakhi aur nagar ka nam 'ilahabad' kar diya. akabar ne prayag ki sthiti ki mahatta ko samajhate hue use apane samrajy ke 12 soobon men se ek ka mukhy sthan bhi banaya. isamen kada aur jaunapur ke pradesh bhi sammilit kar lie ge the. kaha jata hai ki maury samrat ashok ka kaushanbi stnbh isi samay prayag laya gaya tha. ashok aur samudragupt ke prasiddh abhilekhon ke atirikt is par jahangir aur birabal ke lekh bhi ankit hain. birabal ka lekh unaki prayag yatra ka smarak hai- 'snvat 1632 shake 1493 margavadi 5 somavar gngadasasut maharaj birabal shri tirath raj prayag ki yatra suphal likhitamh'. khusaro bag jahangir ke samay men bana tha. yah bag chaukor hai aur isaka kshetraphal 64 ekad hai. isamen anek maqabare hain. poorv ki or gunbad vala maqabara jahangir ke vidrohi putr khusaro ka hai. ise 1662 ee. men jahangir ne bagavat karane ke phalasvaroop mrityu ke saza di thi. ilahabad ke chauk men kuchh samay tak ve nim ke ped khade the, jin par angrezon ne 1857 ke svatntrata sngram men ladane vale bharatiy viron ko phansi di thi.[49]

sngam sthal

manachitr men gnga aur yamuna ka sngam, ilahabad

sngam ka dharmik mahattv bhi bahut hai. gnga-yamuna ke sngam sthal prayag ko puranon[50] men 'tirtharaj' ( tirthon ka raja ) nam se abhihit kiya gaya hai. is sngam ke sambandh men rigved[51] men kaha gaya hai ki jahan krishn (kale) aur shvet (svachchh) jal vali do saritaon ka sngam hai vahan snan karane se manushy svargarohan karata hai. puranokti yah hain ki prajapati ne ahuti ki tin vediyan banayi thin- kurukshetr, prayag aur gaya. inamen prayag madhyam vedi hai. mana jata hai ki yahan gnga, yamuna aur sarasvati (patal se ane vali) tin saritaon ka sngam hua hai. par sarasvati ka koee bahy astitv drishtigat nahin hota. puranon[52] ke anusar jo prayag ka darshan karake usaka namochcharan karata hai tatha vahan ki mitti ka apane sharir par alep karata hai vah papamukt ho jata hai. vahan snan karane vala svarg ko prapt hota hai tatha deh tyag karane vala pun: snsar men utpann nahin hota. yah keshav ko priy (isht) hai. ise triveni kahate hain.

tirtharaj prayag

tirtharaj prayag dharmik evn sanskritik roop se ati-mahattvapoorn hai. isane hamari bharatiy sabhyata ko snbhal kar rakha hai. yah atmgyan aur gyan prapti ka uttam sthan hai. yah manav prem ki shiksha deta hai. aisa mana jata hai ki brahm dev ne brahmand ke nirman se poorv paryavaran ko shuddh karane ke lie ygy yahin kiya isilie isaka nam prayag pada. prayag ka arth hota hai 'shuddhikaran ka sthan'. british shasan ke dauran prayag men prantiy karyalay, uchch nyayalay sthapit kiye gaye. un dinon prayag samajik, bauddhik aur rajanitik gatividhiyon ka kendr tha. prayag ka svatntrata ki ladaee men bhi vishesh yogadan raha hai. prayag ki bhoomi amaron ki bhoomi hai. prayag ka atyadhik dharmik mahatv hai aur tirth ke raja ke roop men jana jata hai, tin pavitr nadiyon prayag ke sngam par sthit hone ki vajah se isamen chhah ghat hain. do ghat gnga ke tat par, do yamuna ke tat par aur do ghat sngam tat par bane hue hain. sngam ke pashchim men dhirty-kuliya aur madhu-kuliya sthit hain. isase age nirnjan tirth aur audity tirth sthit hain. shishir mochan aur parashuram tirth kile ke niche hain. sarasvati nadi ka sthan ise hi mana jata hain. gaughat ka apana vishesh mahatv hai. bahut se log is sthan par snan karane ke bad gau dan karate hain. isase kuchh age kapil-tirth hai jo ki samrat kapil ke dvara nirmit kiya gaya tha. yahi par indeshvar shiv, tarakeshvar kund, aur tarakeshvar shiv mndir bhi hain. dashamesh ghat ke pashchim men lakshmi-tirth hai isake dakshin men mahadevi-tirth hai aur pas men urvashi-tirth evn urvashi kund hain. aisi manyata hai ki apsara urvashi yahan snan karati thi. triveni ke us par agnikar hai, someshvar-mahadev aur som tirth bhi yahi hain.[53]

kalpavas

kalpavas ke dauran rahane ka sthan

prayag men kalpavas ka atyadhik mahatv hai. yah magh ke mah men aur adhik mahatv rakhata hai aur yah paush mah ke 11ven din se magh mah ke 12ven din tak rahata hai. kalpavas ko dhairy, ahinsa aur bhakti ke lie jana jata hai aur bhojan ek din men ek bar hi kiya jata hai. aisi manyata hai ki jo kalpavas ki pratigya karata hai vah agale janm men raja ke roop men janm leta hai.

dharmik manyata

gnga yamuna aur sarasvati ke trivenisngam ko 'onkar' nam se abhihit kiya gaya hai. 'onkar' ka 'om' parabrahm parameshvar ki or rahasyatmak snket karata hai. yahi sarvasukhapradayini triveni ka bhi soochak hai. onkar ka akar sarasvati ka pratik, ukar yamuna ka pratik tatha makar gnga ka pratik hai. tinon kramash: pradyumn, aniruddh tatha snkarshan (hari ke vyooh) ko udbhoot karane vali hai. is prakar in tinon ka sngam triveni nam se vikhyat hai.[54] narasinhapuran[55] men vishnu ko prayag men yogamoorti ke roop men sthit bataya gaya hai. matsy puran[56] ke anusar rudr dvara ek kalp ke uparant pralay karane par bhi prayag nasht nahin hota. us samay pratishthan ke uttari bhag men brahma chhadm vesh men, vishnu veni madhav roop men tatha shiv vat vriksh ke roop men avas karate hain aur sabhi dev, gndharv, siddh tatha rishi papashaktiyon se prayag mandal ki raksha karate hain. isilie matsy puran[57] men tirthayatri ko prayag jakar ek mas nivas karane tatha snyamapoorvak devataon aur pitaron ki pooja karake abhisht phal prapt karane ka vidhan hai.

shiromundan

isi prakar kshaur karm (shiromundan) bhi prayag men sampann hone par pap mukti hetu mana gaya hai. bachchon aur vidhavaon ke kshaur karm ka vidhan to hai hi, yahan tak ki sadhava patniyon ke kshaur karm ka bhi vidhan 'tristhali setu' ke anusar milata hai. vahan bataya gaya hai ki sadhava striyon ko apane keshon ki sundar veni banakar, sabhi prakar ke keshavinyas sambandhi vynjanon se sajakar pati ki agya se (veni ke agr bhag ka) kshaur karm karana chahie. tatpashchath kati huee veni ko anjali men lekar usake barabar svarn ya chandi ki veni bhi lekar jude hath se sngam sthal par baha dena chahie aur kahana chahie ki sabhi pap nasht ho jayen aur hamara saubhagy uttarottar vriddhi par rahe. nari ke lie ek matr prayag men hi kshaur karm karane ka vidhan hai.
