vivaran 'bhishmashtami' hindoo dharm men many pramukh vrat snskaron men se ek hai. yah vrat mahabharat ke prasiddh patr pitamah bhishm se sambndhit hai.

vaiyaghrapadagotray sankrityapravaray ch .

gangaputray bhishmay sarvada brahmacharine ॥ bhishmah shantanavo virah satyavadi jitendriyah .

abhiradbhiravapnotu putrapautrochitan kriyamh ॥

pauranik katha

devavrat (bhishm) hastinapur ke raja shantanu ki patarani gnga ki kokh se utpann hue the. ek samay ki bat hai. raja shantanu shikar khelate-khelate gnga tat ke par chale ge. vahan se lautate vakt unaki bhent haridas kevat ki roopavan putri matsyagndha (satyavati) se huee. shantanu usake lavany par mohit ho ge. raja shantanu ne haridas se usaka apane lie hath manga, parantu haridas ne raja ke prastav ko yah kahate hue thukara diya ki "maharaj apaka jyeshth putr devavrat apake rajy ka uttaradhikari hai, yadi ap meri kanya ke putr ko rajy ka uttaradhikari banane ki ghoshana karen to main taiyar hoon." shantanu ne is bat ko manane se mana kar diya, parantu ve matsyagndha ko n bhoola sake. usaki yad men vyakul rahane lage. ek din devavrat dvara unase unaki vyakulata ka karan poochhane par sara vrittant pata chala. gyan hone par devavrat svayn kevat haridas ke pas gaye aur gngajal hath men lekar ajivan avivahit rahane ki shapath li. isi kathin pratigya ke karan unaka nam bhishm pada. unaka poora jivan saty aur nyay ka paksh lete hue vyatit hua. raja shantanu ne devavrat se prasann hokar use ichchhit mrityu ka varadan diya.

vrat katha

mahabharat ke tathyon ke anusar gngaputr devavrat ki mata devi gnga apane pati ko diye vachan ke anusar apane putr ko apane sath le gee thin. devavrat ki prarambhik shiksha aur lalan-palan inaki mata ke pas hi poora hua. unhonne maharshi parashuram se shastr viddha li. daityaguru shukrachary se bhi inhen kafi kuchh sikhane ka mauka mila. apani anupam yuddhakala ke liye bhi inhen vishesh roop se jana jata hai. jab devavrat ne apani sabhi shikshaen poori kar lin to unhen unaki mata ne unake pita ko saunp diya. kee varshon ke bad pita-putr ka milan hua aur maharaj shantanu ne apane putr ko yuvaraj ghoshit kar diya. samay vyatit hone par satyavati namak yuvati par mohit hone ke karan maharaj shantanu ne yuvati se vivah ka agrah kiya. yuvati ke pita ne apani putri ka vivah karane se poorv yah shart maharaj ke sammukh rakhi ki- "devi satyavati ki hone vali sntan hi rajy ki utaradhikari banegi. isi shart par ve is vivah ke liye sahamati denge."

yah shart maharaj ko svikar nahin thi, parantu jab isaka gyan unake putr devavrat ko hua to unhonne apane pita ke sukh ko dhyan men rakhate hue, yah bhishm pratigya li ki ve sare jivan men brahmachary vrat ka palan karenge. devavrat ki pratigya se prasann hokar unake pita ne unhen ichchha mrihtyu ka varadan diya. kalantar men bhishm ko panch pandavon ke viruddh yuddh karana pada. shikhndi par shastr n uthane ke apane pran ke karan unhonne yuddh kshetr men apane shastr tyag diye. yuddh men ve ghayal ho gaye aur 18 dinon tak mrityu shaiya par pade rahe, parantu sharir chhodane ke liye unhonne soory ke uttarayan hone ki pratiksha ki. jivan ki viparit paristhitiyon men bhi apani pratigya ko nibhane ke karan devavrat bhishm ke nam se amar ho ge. magh mas ke shukl paksh ki ashtami ko bhishm pitamah ki nirvan tithi ke roop men manaya jata hai. is tithi men kush, til, jal se bhishm pitamah ka tarpan karana chahie. isase vyakti ko sabhi papon se mukti milati hai.

mahattv

is vrat ke karane se manushy sundar aur gunavan sntati prapt karata hai-

maghe masi sitashtamyan satiln bhishmatarpanamh . shraddhn ch ye naraah kuryuste syuah santatibhaginah ॥

mahabharat ke anusar jo manushy magh shukl ashtami ko bhishm ke nimitt tarpan, jaladan adi karata hai, usake varshabhar ke pap nasht ho jate hain-

shuklashtamyan tu maghasy dadyadh bhishmay yo jalamh . snvatsarakritn papn tatkshanadev nashyati ॥

  • bhishm ko, jo ki kunvare mrit hue the, prativarsh jal evn shraddh kiya jata hai, jo aisa kare ek varsh men kiye gaye pap se mukt ho jata hai aur santati prapt karata hai.[3]
  • jisaka pita jivit ho, vah bhi bhishm ko jal de sakata hai.[4]

  • pro. pi. si. senagupt ne 'samudragupt' ko 'samanupravishat' mana hai, jo ki trutipoorn evn tarkahin hai, yah manana ki bhishm ki mrityu magh krishn ashtami ko huee n ki magh shukl ashtami ko.[6]
  • bhujabalanibandh[7] men do shlok hain, jo tithitatv, nirnayasindhu evn any granthon men uddhrit hain–
'shuklashtamyan tu maghasy dadyadh bhishmay yo jalamh.
