मध्यकाल में हिन्दी का स्वरूप स्पष्ट हो गया तथा उसकी प्रमुख बोलियाँ विकसित हो गईं। इस काल में भाषा के तीन रूप निखरकर सामने आए— ब्रजभाषा, अवधी व खड़ी बोली। ब्रजभाषा और अवधी का अत्यधिक साहित्यिक विकास हुआ तथा तत्कालीन ब्रजभाषा साहित्य को कुछ देशी राज्यों का संरक्षण भी प्राप्त हुआ। इनके अतिरिक्त मध्यकाल में खड़ी बोली के मिश्रित रूप का साहित्य में प्रयोग होता रहा। इसी खड़ी बोली का 14वीं सदी में दक्षिण में प्रवेश हुआ, अतः वहाँ पर इसका साहित्य में अधिक प्रयोग हुआ। 18वीं सदी में खड़ी बोली को मुसलमान शासकों का संरक्षण मिला तथा इसके विकास को नई दिशा मिली।

  • viliyam keri ne 1816 ee. mean likha— 'hindi kisi ek pradesh ki bhasha nahian balki desh mean sarvatr boli jane vali bhasha hai.'
  • ech. ti. kolabruk ne likha— 'jis bhasha ka vyavahar bharat ke pratyek prant ke log karate haian, jo padhe–likhe tatha anapadh donoan ki sadharan bolachal ki bhasha hai, jisako pratyek gaanv mean tho de bahut log avashy hi samajh lete haian, usi ka yatharth nam hindi hai.'
  • jarj griyarsan ne hindi ko 'am bolachal ki mahabhasha' kaha hai.
