any janakari shatapath-brahman ke anusar srishti ke prarambh men, brahm ke do roop the- moort aur amoort. inhen ‘yath’ aur ‘tyath’ arthat sath tatha asath kaha ja sakata hai-‘dvai vav brahmano roope. moortt chaivamoorttamh. sthitn ch yachch. sachch tyachch’.[2]

shatapath brahman (angrezi: Shatapatha Brahmana) shukl yajurved ka brahmanagranth hai. brahman granthon men ise sarvadhik pramanik mana jata hai. shatapath brahman, shukl yajurved ke donon shakhaon kanv v madhyandini se sambaddh hai. yah sabhi brahman granthon men sarvadhik mahattvapoorn granth hai. isake rachayita yagyvalky mane jate hain. shatapath ke ant men ullekh hai- 'shhadinyanimani shuklani yajooshi bajasaneyen yagyavalyen khyayante.' shatapath brahman men 14 kand hain jisamen vibhinn prakar ke ygyon ka poorn evn vistrit adhyayan milata hai. 6 se 10 kand tak ko shandily kand kahate hain. isamen gndhar, kaikay aur shalv janapadon ki vishesh charcha ki gee hai. any kandon men aryavart ke madhy tatha poorvi bhag kuroo, pnchal, kosal, videh, srijany adi janapadon ka ullekh hain. shatapath brahman men vaidik snskrit ke sarasvat mandal se poorv ki or prasar hone ka snket milata hai. shatapath brahman men ygyon ko jivan ka sabase mahattvapoorn krity bataya gaya hai. hal sambandhi anushthan ka vistrit varnan bhi isamen prapt hota hai. ashvamedh ygy ke sandarbh men anek prachin samraton ka ullekh hai, jisamen janak, dushyant aur janamejay ka nam mahattvapoorn hai. samast brahman-granthon ke madhy shatapath brahman sarvadhik brihatkay hai. shuklayajurved ki donon shakhaon-madhyandin tatha kanv men yah upalabdh hai. yah taittiriy brahman ke hi sadrish svaranikat hai.[3] anek vidvanon ke vichar se yah tathy isaki prachinata ka dyotak hai.

ganaratnamahodadhi ke anusar shatapath ka yah namakaran usamen vidyaman sau adhyayon ke adhar par hua hai-

  • 'shatnpanthano yatr shatapath: tattulyagranth:'.[4]

shridhar shastri ke bare men bhi aisa mana hai-

  • ’shatn panthano marga namadhyaya yasy tachchhatapathamh’.[5]

yadyapi kanvashatapath-brahman men ek sau char adhyay hain, tathapi vahan ‘chhatrinyay’ se yah sngya anvarth ho jati hai. kuchh vidvanon ne yah sambhavana prakat ki hai ki shuklayajurved ki vajasaneyi-snhita se sambaddh koee ‘shatapathi’-shakha rahi hogi, jisake adhar par is brahman ka namakaran hua hoga. is anuman ka adhar asam aur udisa pradesh ke kuchh kshetron men prapt ‘satpathi’ aspad hai. kintu yah mat many isalie nahin pratit hota, ki shakhaon se sambaddh prapt samagri men ‘shatapath’ ya ‘shatapathi’ nam ki kisi shakha ka kahin bhi ullekh nahin hai. sau-adhyay vali bat hi adhik vishvasaniy pratit hoti hai.

madhyandin-shatapath ke vibhag, chayanakram evn pratipady

madhyandin shatapath-brahman men 14 kand, sau adhyay, 438 brahman tatha 7624 kandikaen hai.

  • pratham kand men darsh aur poornamas ishtiyon ka pratipadan hai.
  • dvitiy kand men agnyadhan, punaradhan, agnihotr, upasthan, pravatsyadupasthan, agatopasthan, pindapitriygy, agrayan, dakshayan tatha chaturmasyadi yargo ki mimansa ki gee hai.
  • tritiy kand men dikshabhishavaparyant somayag ka varnan hai.
  • chaturth kand men somayog ke tinon savanon ke antargat kiye jane vale karmon ka, shodashisadrish somasnstha, dvadashahayag tatha satradiyagon ka pratipadan hua hai.
  • pancham kand men vajapey tatha rajasooy yagon ka varnan hai.
  • chhathe kand men ushasambharan tatha vishnukram ka vivechan hua hai.
  • sataven men chayan yag, garhapaty chayan, agnikshetr-snskar tatha darbhastambadi ke door karane tak ke karyon vivechan hua hai.
  • athaven kand men pranabhrith prabhuti ishtakaon ki sthapanavidhi varnit hai.
  • navam kand men shatrudriy hom, dhishny chayan, punashchiti: tatha chityupasthan ka niroopan hain.
  • dasham kand men chiti-sampatti, chayanayag stuti, chityapakshapuchchh-vichar, chityagnivedi ka pariman, usaki sampatti, chayanakal, chityagni ke chhandon ka avayavaroop, yajushmati aur lokamprina adi ishtakaon ki snstha, upanishadaroop se agni ki upasana, man ki srishti, lokadiroop se agni ki upasana, agni ki sarvatomukhata tatha sampradayapravartak rishivnsh prabhriti ka vivechan hua hai.
  • gyarahaven kand men adhan-kal, darshapoornamas tatha dakshayanaygyon ki avadhi, dakshayan ygy, pathikridishti, abhyuditeshti, darshapoornamasiy dravyon ka arthavad, agnihotriy arthavad, brahmachari ke karttavy, mitravindeshti, havi:-samriddhi, chaturmasyarthavad, pnch mahaygy, svadhyay-prashnsa, prayashchitt, anshu aur adabhyagrh, adhyatmavidya, pashubandh-prashnsa tatha haviryag ke avashisht vidhanon par vichar kiya gaya hai.

kanvashatapath ka vibhag, chayanakram evn pratipady

kanv-shatapath ki vyavastha aur vinyas men vipul antar hai. usamen 17 kand, 104 adhyay, 435 brahman tatha 6806 kandikaen hai.

  • pratham kand men adhan-punaradhan, agnihotr, agrayan, pindapitriygy, dakshayan ygy, upasthan tatha chaturmasy sngyk yagon ka vivechan hai.
  • dvitiy kand men poornamas tatha darshayagon ka pratipadan hai.
  • tritiy kand men agnihotriy arthavad tatha darshapoornamasiy arthavad vivechit hain.
  • chaturth kand men somayagajany diksha ka varnan hain.
  • pancham kand men somayag, savanatrayag karm, shodashi prabhriti somasnstha, dvadashahayag, triratrahin dakshina, chatustrinshaddhom aur satradharm ka niroopan hain.
  • shashth kand men vajapeyayag ka vivechan hai.
  • saptam kand men rajasooy ka vivechan hai.
  • ashtam men ukha-sambharan ka vivechan hai.
  • navam kand se lekar barahaven kand tak vibhinn chayan-yag nirupit hain.
  • terahaven kand men adhan kal, pathikrit ishti, prayajanuyamantran, shnyuvakh, patnisnyaj, brahmachary, darshapoornamas ki shesh vidhiyon tatha pashubandh ka niroopan hai.
  • chaudahaven kand men diksha-kram, prishthayabhiplavadi, sautramaniyag, agnihotr-prayashchitt, mritakagnihotr adi ka varnan hua hai.

uparyukt vivaran se spasht hai ki donon hi shakhaon hi pratipady vishay-vastu saman hai. keval kram men kuchh bhinnata hai. vishay ki ekaroopata ki drishti se madhyandin-shatapath adhik vyavasthit hai. isaka ek any vaishishty yah hai ki vajasaneyi-snhita ke athaharaven adhyayon ki kramabaddh vyakhya isake pratham nau adhyayon men mil jati hai. keval pind-pitriygy ka varnan snhita men darshapoornamas ke anantar hai.

shatapath brahman ke pravachanakarta

parampara se shatapath-brahman ke rachayita vajasaney yagyvalky mane jate hain. shatapath ke ant men ullekh hai-‘adityanimani shuklani yajoonshi vajasaneyen yagyvalkyenakhyayante.’ mahabharat aur puranon men unake vishay men prapy vivaran ke anusar yagyvalky ka ashram saurashtr kshetr ke anartabhag men kahin tha.[6] janak se sambaddh hone par mithila men bhi unhonne nivas kiya. shridhar sharma vare ke anusar unaka janm shravan shukl chaturdashividdha poornima ko hua tha.[7] vayu puran[8], brahmand puran[9], tatha vishnu puran[10] men unake pita ka nam brahmarat batalaya gaya hai, jabaki bhagavat puran[11] ke anusar yagyvalky devarat ke putr the. anushruti ke anusar unake guru vaishampayan the, jinase bad men unaka matabhed ho gaya tha. tadanantar unhonne soory ki upasana ki, jisase unhen samagr vedon ka gyan prapt hua. janak ne unaki isi prasiddhi se akrisht hokar unhen apane yahan amantrit kiya.[12] ve ‘vajasani’ kahalate the-
vaj ityannasy namadheyamh, annn ve vaj iti shrute:. vajasy sanidani yasy maharsherasti soayn vajasanistasy putro vajasaney iti tasy yagyvalky namadheyamh (kanvasnhita, bhashyopakramanika).
svayn shatapath-brahman ne yagyvalky ko vajasaney batalaya hai.[13] isalie usi ko antim roop se svikar kiya jana chahie. brahmarat ya devarat ityadi unhin ke namantar ho sakate hain. ‘skand puran’ ke ‘nagarakhand’[14] ke anusar yagyvalky ki mata ka nam sunanda tha. knsarika unaki bahan thi. brihadaranyakopanishad[15] se gyat hota hai ki yagyvalky ki katyayani aur maitreyi namni do patniyan thin. puranon men katyayani ka ullekh kalyani nam se bhi hai. skand puran ne hi katyayan aur paraskar ko ek manakar unhen yagyvalky ka putr batalaya hai. ullekhaniy hai ki shuklayajurved ka grihyakalp ‘paraskar grihyasootr’ ke roop men prasiddh hai. mahabharat (shanti parv)[16] ke anusar yagyvalky ke 100 shishy the. vaishampayan ko yagyvalky ka matamah bataya gaya hai-
tat: svamatamahanamahamunervriddhadvaishampayanadyajurvedamadhitavanh.[17]

puranon men yagyvalky ki anek siddhiyon aur chamatkaron ka ullekh hai. parampara yagyvalky ko shuklayajurved-snhita aur shatapath-brahman ke sampadan ke atirikt yagyvalky smriti, yagyvalky shiksha aur yogiyagyvalky shirshak any granthon ke pranayan ka shrey bhi deti hai. snbhav hai, pratham yagyvalky ke anantar, usaki parampara men yagyvalky upadhidhari any yagyvalkyon ne smriti prabhriti granthon ki rachana ki ho.

yajurved snhita

is ved ki do snhitayen hain.

ek shukl

shukl yajurved yagyvalky ko prapt hua. use `vajasaneyi-snhita´ bhi kahate hain. `vajasaneyi-snhita´ ki 17 shakhayen hain. usamen 40 adhyay hain. usaka pratyek adhyay kandikaon men vibhakt hai, jinaki snkhya 1975 hai. isake pahale ke 25 adhyay prachin mane jate hain aur pichhe ke 15 adhyay bad ke. isamen darsh paurnamas, agnishtom, vajapey, agnihotr, chaturmasy, ashvamedh, purushamedh adi ygyon ke varnan hai .

doosari krishn

krishn-yajurved-snhita shukl se ki hai. use `taittiriy-snhita´ bhi kahate hain. yajurved ke kuchh mantr rigved ke hain to kuchh atharvaved ke hain.

shatapath brahman ka rachana-kal

maikdanel ne brahmanakal ko 800 ee. poorv se 500 ee.poo. tak mana hai, lekin pro. si. vi. vaidy aur daftari ka mat adhik grahy pratit hota hai jisamen unhonne shatapath-brahman ka rachana-kal nyoonatam ee. poo. 24vin shatabdi svikar kiya hai.[18] yah age ee.poo. 3000 tak jata hai. unake anusar shatapath-brahman ki rachana mahabharat-yuddh ke anantar huee. mahabharat ka yuddh ee.poo. 3102 men hua. at: yahi samay yagyvalky ka bhi mana ja sakata hai. pro. vintaranits bhi mahabharat-yuddh ki uparyukt tithi se sahamat pratit hote hain.[19] isalie aj se pray: 5000 varsh poorv shatapath-brahman ka rachana-kal mana ja sakata hai. pro. kith ne bhi shatapath ko apekshakrit adhik prachin brahman mana hai.[20] krittikaon ke vishay men bhi shatapath men jo vivaran milata hai, vah shnkar balakrishn dikshit ke anusar 3000 ee.poo. ke as-pas ka hi hai. shatapath ke anusar krittikaen thik poorv disha men udit hoti hain aur ve vahan se chyut nahin hoti.[21] pn. satavalekar ke anusar[22] kisi rishi ne krittikaon ko poorv disha men achyut roop men dekha, tabhi shatapath men usaka ullekh vartamanakalik kriya se kiya gaya. ab to poorv disha ko chhodakar krittikaen oopar ki or anyatr chali gee hain. unaka oopar ki or sthanantaran 5000 varshon se kam ki avadhi men nahin ho sakata. tandy-brahman men sarasvati ke lupt hone ke sthan ka nam milata hai-‘vinashan’ tatha pun: udbhoot hone ke sthan ka nam hai ‘plaksh prastravan’. kintu shatapath men sarasvati ke lupt hone ki ghatana ka ullekh nahin hai. pratit hota hai ki shatapath ke kal tak sarasvati lupt nahin huee thi. raja ke abhishekarth jis sarasvat jal ko taiyar kiya jata tha, usamen sarasvati ka jal bhi milaya jata tha.[23] is tathy se bhi shatapath ki prachinata par prakash padata hai.

shatapathagat ygy-mimansa ka vaishishty

shatapath men vividh prakar ke ygyon ke vidhi-vidhan ka atyant sangopang vivaran prapt hota hai. maikdanel ne isi karan ise vaidik vanmay men rigved tatha atharvaved ke anantar sarvadhik mahattvapoorn granth batalaya hai.[24] ygyon ke nanaroopon tatha vividh anushthanon ka jis asadharan paripoornata ke sath shatapath men niroopan hai, any brahmanon men nahin. adhyatmik drishti se bhi ygyon ke svaroop-niroopan ka shrey is brahman ko prapt hai. shatapath-brahmanakar is tathy se avagat hai ki vaidh-yag ek pratikatmak vyapar hai, isilie usane antaryag evn bahiryag men poorn samnjasy tatha anuroopy par bal diya hai. pra. loois renoo ne bhi is or ingit kiya hai.[25] shatapath ke anusar ygy ka svaroop dvividh hai- prakrit evn kritrim. prakrit ygy prakriti men nirantar chal raha hai; usi ke anugaman se any ygyon ke vidhan bane – ‘devanh anuvidha vai manushya: yadh deva: akurvanh tadahn karavani.’ ‘ygy’ ke namakaran ka hetu usaka vistrit kiya jana hai- ‘tadh yadenn tanvate tadenn janayanti s tayamano jayate[26] is brahman men vakh, purush, pran, prajapati, vishnu adi ko ygy se samikrit kiya gaya hai. shatapath ne ygy ko jivan ka sabase mahattvapoorn krity batalaya hai- ‘ygyo vai shreshthatamn karm’[27] tadanusar jagat agnishomatmak hai. som ann hai tatha agni annad. agniroopi annad somaroopi ann ki ahuti grahan karata rahata hai. yahi kriya jagat men satat vidyaman hai. shatapath-brahman men ygy ki pratikatmak vyakhaen bhi hai. ek roopak ke anusar ygy purush hai, havirdvan usaka shir, ahavaniy mukh, agnidhriy tatha marjaliy donon bahuen hain. yahan ygy ka manavikaran kiya gaya hai.[28] srishti-ygy ka roopak bhi ullekhy hai. tadanusar snvatsar hi yajaman hai, rituen ygyanishthan karati hain, basant agnighr hai, at: basant men davagni phailati hain; grishm-ritu adhvaryusvaroop hai, kyonki vah tapt-si hoti hai. varsha udgata hai, kyonki usamen zor se shabd karate hue jal-varsha hoti hai; praja brahmavati hai; hemant hota hai.
yah ygy pankt[29] hai. shatapath ne ygy ko devon ki atma kaha hai.[30] anrit-bhashanadi karyon se ygy ko kshati pahunchati hai.[31] ygy hi prakash, din, devata tatha soory hai. devon ne ygy ke dvara hi sab kuchh paya tha. ygy ke dvara yajaman mrityu se oopar uth jata hai.

shatapath ne ygy-mimansa ka prarambh haviryagon se kiya hai jinaka adhar agnihotr hai. agnihotri ko agni mrityu ke pashchath bhi nasht nahin karata, apitu mata-pita ke saman navin janm de deta hai. agnihotr kabhi bhi bnd nahin hota. yah yajaman ko svarg le jane vali nauka ke sadrish hai-‘naurh va esha yadagnihotramh’[32] ‘adhvaro vai ygy:’[33] prabhriti ullekhon se spasht hai ki shatapath ki drishti men samanyat: ygy men hinsa nahin honi chahie. gyarahaven kand men panchamahaygyon-bhootaygy, manushyaygy, pitriygy, devaygy aur brahmaygy ka vishesh vivechan hai.[34] svadhyayaroop ‘brahmaygy’ ki prarochana karate hue vahin kaha gaya hai ki rikh ka adhyayan devon ke lie payash ki ahuti hai, yajushh ka ajyahuti, sam ka somahuti, atharvanigarash ka medash-ahuti hai. vibhinn vedangon (anushasan), vakovaky, itihas aur puran tatha narashnsi gathaon ka adhyayan devon ke lie madhu ki ahuti hai. pn. motilal shastri ne shatapath-brahman ki yag-vivechana men nihit adhyatmik pratikavatta ki vishad vyakhya apane vigyanabhashy men ki hai.[35]

shatapath-brahman ne ygy ki sarvangin samriddhi par bal diya hai. isake lie yagyvalky ne anek poorvavarti yagavettaon se apana matavaibhiny bhi prakat kiya hai. unaki drishti men ygy ek sajiv purush hai. usake lie bhi sharir ke achchhadanarth vastr evn kshutpipasa-shamanarth bhojan chahie.[36] ve kan-kan mnt jivan-pradayini shakti dekhate hain. kisi bhi roop men ygy ka ang-vaikaly unhen abhisht nahin hai. ygy-vidhi ko yagyvalky apaurushey manate hain. kathin niyamon se ve palayan nahin karate. kalagat, deshagat, patragat, vastugat tatha kramagat auchityo. par shatapath-brahmanakar ki nirantar drishti rahi hai. vah shabdaprayog ki drishti se bhi nirantar sajag hai. udaharan ke lie ‘darsheshti’ men adhvaryu vatsapakaran karate samay ‘vayav:sth’ mantr ka uchcharan bhi karata hai. taittiriy shakha men ‘vayav:sth’ ke sath-sath ‘upayav:sth’[37] path bhi milata hai.[38] any achary bhale hi donon ko ek samajhate hon, kintu yagyvalky ne ‘vayav:sth’ path par hi bal diya hai. lokavyavahar ke prati unamen samadar ki drishti hai. ygy-vidhan ke samay usaka ve dhyan rakhate hain. ygy-vedi ka svaroop stri ke saman batalakar unhonne apani saundary-drishti ka parichay diya hai-‘yosha vai vvaidirvrishagni: parigrihy vai yosh vvrishann shete.[39] isi prasng men unaka kathan hai ki ygy-vedi ke donon ans unnat hone chahie. madhy men use patali hona chahie tatha usaka pichhala bhag (shroni) adhik chauda hona chahie-
sa vai pashchadvariyasi syath. madhye snsvarita pun: purastadurvyevamiv hi yoshan prashasanti prithushronirvimrishtantaran sa madhye sngrahyoti jushtamevainametaddevebhy: karoti.[40]
is prakar ygy-vivechana ke prasng men shatapath-brahmanakar ka drishtikon atyant vyavaharik, sarvangin aur kalamay hai.

shatapath-brahman men sanskritik tattv

shatapath-brahman ke shashth se lekar dasaven kand tak, jinhen ‘shandily-kand’ bhi kahate hain, kyonki inamen unake mat ka adarapoorvak paun: punyen ullekh hai, gandhar, kekay aur shalv janapadon ki vishesh charcha ki gee hai. any kandon men aryavart ke madhy tatha poorvabhag- kuru panchal, kosal, videh, srinjay adi janapadon ka ullekh hai. shatapath-brahman men vaidik snskriti ke sarasvat-mandal se poorv ki or prasar ka sanketiy kathan hai. ashvamedh ke prasng men anek prachin samraton ka ullekh hai jinamen janak, dushynt aur janamejay ke nam mahattvapoorn hain. devashastriy samagri bhi shatapath men pushkal hain. varun ko ‘dharmapati’ kaha gaya hai[41] jo unake rit (prakriti ke shashvat niyam) palak svaroop ka dyotak hai. is brahman men kul 3003 devon ki sthiti batalaee gee hai, kintu vastav men 33 devataon ka hi svaroop-niroopan hai.[42] vidagdh shakaly ne jab yagyvalky se 3003 devon ke nam poochhe, to unhonne uttar diya ki ye dev n hokar unaki mahilaen hain. namna keval 33 devon ka hi ullekh hai. ye hain-

abhichar ko is brahman men ‘valag’ kaha gaya hai-‘idamahn te valagamutkirami yanme nishthyoayamatyo nicharavam’[43] shram evn tap ka mahattv is brahman men paun:punyen pradarshit hai anritabhashi ko amedhy kaha gaya hai-‘amedhyo vai purusho yadanritn’ vadati[44]

shatapath-brahman akhyanon ka ek atyant mahattvapoorn snkalan hai inamen anek aise akhyan hain, jinaka itihas-puran men vishad upabrinhan hua hai. inamen indr-vritr-yuddh, yoshitkami gandharv, suparni tatha kadroo, chyavan bhargav tatha sharyat manav, svarbhanu asur tatha soory, veny, asur namuchi evn indr, puroorava-urvashi, keshinh-rajany, manu evn shraddha tatha jal-plavan adi ke akhyan atyant mahattvapoorn hain.

srishti-prakriya

shatapath-brahman ke anusar srishti ke prarambh men, brahm ke do roop the- moort aur amoort. inhen ‘yath’ aur ‘tyath’ arthat sath tatha asath kaha ja sakata hai-‘dvai vav brahmano roope. moortt chaivamoorttamh. sthitn ch yachch. sachch tyachch’.[45] ygy vishvasrishti ka moolahetu hai. ygy men hi prajaen utpann hueen, jinase srishti ka vikas hota raha-‘ygyadvai praja: ygyatprajayamana mithuna prajayante…antato ygysyema: praja: prajayant’.[46] srishti-karta prajapati ygy hain. manu-matsy-prakaran men pralay ke anantar manu ke dvara jal evn amiksha se sampadit ygy se ek sundar stri ki utpatti batalaee gee hai. is prakar ygy vishv ki nabhisthali hai. abhipray yah hai ki srishti ke arambh men ekamatr brahm ki satta thi aur tadanantar prajapati ki-‘prajapatirva idamagr asith’.[47] is bindu par shatapath ka any brahmanagranthon se poorn sahamaty dikhata hai. age prajapati ke ajayaman tatha vijayaman (nirukt tatha anirukt) roopon ka ullekh hai-
