sumitra ramayan ki pramukh patr aur raja dasharath ki tin maharaniyon men se ek hain. sumitra ayodhya ke raja dasharath ki patni tatha lakshman evn shatrughn ki mata thin. maharani kaushalya pattamahishi thin. maharani kaikeyi maharaj ko sarvadhik priy thin aur shesh men shri sumitra ji hi pradhan thin. maharaj dasharath pray: kaikeyi ke mahal men hi raha karate the. sumitra ji maharani kausalya ke sannikat rahana tatha unaki seva karana apana dharm samajhati thin. putreshti-ygy samapt hone par agni ke dvara prapt charoo ka adha bhag to maharaj ne kaushalya ji ko diya shesh ka adha kaikeyi ko prapt hua. chaturthansh jo shesh tha, usake do bhag karake maharaj ne ek bhag kaushalya tatha doosara kaikeyi ke hathon par rakh diya. donon raniyon ne use sumitra ji ko pradan kiya. samay par mata sumitra ne do putron ko janm diya. kaushalya ji ke diye bhag ke prabhav se lakshman ji shriram ke aur kaikeyi ji dvara diye gaye bhag ke prabhav se shatrughn bharat ji ke anugami hue. vaise charon kumaron ko ratri men nidra mata sumitra hi karati thin. anek bar mata kaushalya shri ram ko apane pas sula letin. ratri men jagane par ve rone lagate. mata ratri men hi sumitra ke bhavan men pahunchakar kahatin- 'sumitra! apane ram ko lo. inhen tumhari god ke bina nidra hi nahin ati dekho, inhonne ro-rokar ankhe lal kar li hain.' shri ram sumitra ki god men jate hi so jate.

  • kaushalya ki apeksha sumitra prakhar, prabhavi evn sngharshamayi ramani hai . kaikeyi ke vachanon ki palana evn shriram prabhu ke sath jab lakshman apani mata se van jane ki agya chahate hain to vah kahati hai ki jahan shriram ji ka nivas ho vahin ayodhya hai . jahan soory ka prakash ho vahin din hai . yadi nishchay hi sita-ram van ko jate hain to ayodhya men tumhara kuchh bhi kam nahin hai . ‘manas’ ki ukt pnktiyan avalokaniy hain-

avadh tahan jahn ram nivasoo . tahnin divasu jahn bhanu prakasoo .
jaun pai siy ram ban jahin . avadh tumhar kaju kachhu nahin॥[1]

  • sumitra ne sadaiv apane putr ko vivekapoorn kary karane ko prerit kiya . rag, dvesh, eershya, mad se door rahane ka acharan sikhaya aur man-vachan-karm se apane bhaee ki seva men lin rahane ka upadesh diya, yatha-

ragu roshu irisha madu mohoo . jani sapanehun inh ke bas hohoo ..
sakal prakar vikar bihaee . man kram vachan karehu sevakaee॥[2]

is prakar sumitra itihas ki punaravritti nahin, balki navin chetana se susampann nari hai. vah ek adarsh man ke roop men ram-lakshman ko karaniy ke lie prerit karati hai .

ram vanavas ke samay

pita se vanavas ki agya pakar shri ram ne mata kaushalya se to agya li, kintu sumitra ke samip ve svayn nahin gaye. vahan unhonne keval lakshman ko bhej diya. mata-kaushalya shri ram ko rokakar kaikeyi ka virodh nahin kar sakati thin, kintu sumitra ji ke sambandh men yah bat nahin thi. yadi nyay ka paksh lekar ve ad jatin to unaka virodh karane ka sahas kisi men nahin tha. lakshman dvara shri ram ke sath van jane ke liye agya mangane par mata sumitra ji ne jo upadesh diya hai, vah unake vishal hriday ka sundar parichay hai-

tat tumhari matu baidehi. pita ramu sab bhanti sanehi॥
avadh tahan jahn ram nivasoo. tahnin divasu jahn bhanu prakasoo॥
jaun pai siy ramu ban jahin. avadh tumhara kaju kachhu nahin॥
putravati jubati jag soee. raghupati bhagatu jasu sutu hoee॥
sakal sukrit kar bad phalu ehoo. ram siy pad sahaj sanehoo॥
tumh kahun ban sab bhanti supasoo. sng pitu matu ramu siy jasoo॥
jehin n ramu ban lahahin kalesoo. sut soee karehu ihi upadesoo॥

is prakar mata sumitra ne lakshman ko jivan ke sarvottam upadesh ke sath apana ashirvad bhi diya. mata sumitra ka hi vah adarsh hriday tha ki pranadhik putr ko unhonne kah diya ki 'lakshman! tum shri ram ko dasharath, sita ko mujhe tatha van ko ayodhya janakar sukhapoorvak shriram ke sath van jao.'

charitrik visheshataen

  • sumitra lakshman ki mata ke roop men prasiddh hote hue bhi ram-katha ki pray: mook patr hain. unake charitr ka katha-vikas men vishesh mahattv nahin hai aur n usamen charitrik jatilataon ki koee sambhavanaen hain. yahi karan hai ki ram-katha sambandhi anek prakaranon men unaka namollekh tak nahin milata. lakshman aur shatrughn ki mata ke roop men sumitra ki prasiddhi ke atirikt ram van-gaman ke avasar par apane putr ko saharsh bhej dena unaki charitrik udarata ka praman hai.
  • valmiki ne kaha hai ki ve kaushalya aur kaikeyi donon ko priy thin. yadyapi unhen apane pati dasharath ki upekshaon evn tiraskaron ke maun snketon ka samana karana pada hai phir bhi ve ant tak unaki shubhechchhu bani rahin.
  • valmiki ke uparant sumitra ke charitr men ram-katha ke kaviyon ne koee ullekhaniy vikas nahin dikhaya.
  • 'ramacharitamanas' men unake charitr men paramparagat saudary ke atirikt kuchh any visheshataon ka bhi kathan kiya gaya hai, yadyapi manasakar bhi unhen adhik mukhar patr nahin bana sake. manasakar lakshman ke pravas ki anumati mangane par unake putr-prem ke sath unake sahas ka bhi parichay deta hai. yahi nahin, ram-katha ke any anukool patron ki bhanti tulasidas ki sumitra bhi ram ki bhakt hain.

  • vastut: sumitra ke charitr ke bahane tulasidas ne dikhaya hai ki manushy jivan ki sarthakata ram-bhakti men hi hai tatha jis mata ne ram-bhakt putr paida n kiya, usaka jivan pashu-tuly hai. isilie apane putr ko ram ke sath van bhejane men ve garv ka anubhav karati hain.
  • 'manas' ki apeksha 'gitavali' men sumitra ke charitr men matrisulabh vatsaly ki abhivynjana adhik huee hai.
  • vishvamitr ke sath van jane ke avasar par ve ram-lakshman ke kushalakshem ke lie atyant chintit hoti hain. doosari or jab unhen lakshman ke shakti lagane ka samachar milata hai, tab ve shatrughn ko ran-kshetr men jane ko protsahit karate hue ek viramata ke darp aur gaurav ko prakat karati hain.
  • adhunik yug men maithilisharan gupt ne saket men sumitra ke charitr men isi darp ka chitran karate hue unhen lakshman aur shatrughn ki mata ke sachche roop men prastut kiya hai. parantu saketakar unake charitrik vikas ki un sambhavanaon ka nirdesh nahin kar saka hai, jinhen usane kaikeyi ke charitr men dikhaya hai, isi karan kuchh alochakon ko usaki urmila vishayak kalpana men aparipakvata ke darshan hote hain.
