kamatanath ne kshama-yachana n ki, apani bhool bhi svikar n ki, lajjit bhi nahin hua. ek minat to vidrohi bhav se khada raha, phir bola- 'ham logon ki salah tin hi boron ki huee aur tin bore ke lie panch tin ghi kafi tha. isi hisab se aur chizen bhi kam kar di gayi hain.'
phoolamati ugr hokar boli- 'kisaki ray se ata kam kiya gaya?'
'ham logon ki ray se.'
'to meri ray koee chiz nahin hai?'
'hai kyon nahin; lekin apana hani-labh to ham samajhate hain?'
phoolamati hakki-bakki hokar usaka munh takane lagi. is vaky ka ashay usaki samajh men n aya. apana hani-labh! apane ghar men hani-labh ki zimmedar vah ap hai. doosaron ko, chahe ve usake pet ke janme putr hi kyon n hon, usake kamon men hastakshep karane ka kya adhikar? yah launda to is dhithaee se javab de raha hai, mano ghar usi ka hai, usi ne mar-marakar grihasthi jodi hai, main to gair hoon! jara isaki hekadi to dekho.
usane tamatamaye hue mukh se kaha- 'mere hani-labh ke zimmedar tum nahin ho. mujhe akhtiyar hai, jo uchit samajhoon, vah karoon. abhi jakar do bore ata aur panch tin ghi aur lao aur age ke lie khabaradar, jo kisi ne meri bat kati.'

vah jhamakakar uthi aur bahoo ke pas jakar kathor svar men boli- 'tijori kyon kholati ho bahoo, mainne to kholane ko nahin kaha?'
badi bahoo ne ni:snkoch bhav se uttar diya- 'bazar se saman aya hai, to dam n diya jayega.'
'kaun chiz kis bhav men ayi hai aur kitani ayi hai, yah mujhe kuchh nahin maloom! jab tak hisab-kitab n ho jaye, rupaye kaise diye jayn?'
'hisab kitab sab ho gaya hai.'
'kisane kiya?'
'ab main kya janoon kisane kiya? jakar maradon se poochho! mujhe hukm mila, rupaye lakar de do, rupaye liye jati hoon!'
phoolamati khoon ka ghoont pikar rah gayi. is vakt bigadane ka avasar n tha. ghar men mehaman stri-purush bhare hue the. agar is vakt usane ladakon ko danta, to log yahi kahenge ki inake ghar men pndit ji ke marate hi phoot pad gayi. dil par patthar rakhakar phir apani kothari men chali gayi. jab mehaman vida ho jayenge, tab vah ek-ek ki khabar legi. tab dekhegi, kaun usake samane ata hai aur kya kahata hai. inaki sari chaukadi bhula degi.

kintu kothari ke ekant men bhi vah nishchint n baithi thi. sari paristhiti ko giddh drishti se dekh rahi thi, kahan satkar ka kaun-sa niyam bhng hota hai, kahan maryadaon ki upeksha ki jati hai. bhoj arambh ho gaya. sari biradari ek sath pngat men baitha di gayi. angan men mushkil se do sau adami baith sakate hain. ye panch sau adami itani-si jagah men kaise baith jayenge? kya adami ke oopar adami bithae jayenge? do pngaton men log bithaye jate to kya buraee ho jati? yahi to hota ki barah baje ki jagah bhoj do baje samapt hota; magar yahan to sabako sone ki jaldi padi huee hai. kisi tarah yah bala sir se tale aur chain se soyen! log kitane satakar baithe hue hain ki kisi ko hilane ki bhi jagah nahin. pattal ek-par-ek rakhe hue hain. pooriyan thndi ho geen. log garam-garam mang rahe hain. maide ki pooriyan thndi hokar chimadi ho jati hain. inhen kaun khayega? rasoiye ko kadhav par se n jane kyon utha diya gaya? yahi sab baten nak katane ki hain.

sahasa shor macha, tarakariyon men namak nahin. badi bahoo jaldi-jaldi namak pisane lagi. phoolamati krodh ke mare oth chaba rahi thi, par is avasar par munh n khol sakati thi. namak pisa aur pattalon par dala gaya. itane men phir shor macha- pani garam hai, thnda pani lao! thnde pani ka koee prabandh n tha, barf bhi n mngaee gayi. adami bazar daudaya gaya, magar bazar men itani rat gaye barf kahan? adami khali hath laut aya. mehamanon ko vahi nal ka garam pani pina pada. phoolamati ka bas chalata, to ladakon ka munh nonch leti. aisi chhichhaledar usake ghar men kabhi n huee thi. us par sab malik banane ke lie marate hain. barf jaisi zaroori chiz mngavane ki bhi kisi ko sudhi n thi! sudhi kahan se rahe- jab kisi ko gap ladane se phursat mile. mehaman apane dil men kya kahenge ki chale hain biradari ko bhoj dene aur ghar men barf tak nahin!
achchha, phir yah halachal kyon mach gayi? are, log pngat se uthe ja rahe hain. kya mamala hai?
phoolamati udasin n rah saki. kothari se nikalakar baramade men ayi aur kamatanath se poochha- 'kya bat ho gayi lalla? log uthe kyon ja rahe hain?' kamata ne koee javab n diya. vahan se khisak gaya. phoolamati jhunjhalakar rah gayi. sahasa kaharin mil gayi. phoolamati ne usase bhi yah prashn kiya. maloom hua, kisi ke shorabe men mari huee chuhiya nikal ayi. phoolamati chitralikhit-si vahin khadi rah gayi. bhitar aisa ubal utha ki divar se sir takara le! abhage bhoj ka prabandh karane chale the. is phoohadapan ki koee had hai, kitane adamiyon ka dharm satyanash ho gaya! phir pngat kyon n uth jaye? ankhon se dekhakar apana dharm kaun gnvayega? ha! sara kiya-dhara mitti men mil gaya. saikadon rupaye par pani phir gaya! badanami huee vah alag.

mehaman uth chuke the. pattalon par khana jyon-ka-tyon pada hua tha. charon ladake angan men lajjit khade the. ek doosare ko iljam de raha tha. badi bahoo apani devaraniyon par bigad rahi thi. devaraniyan sara dosh kumud ke sir dalati thi. kumud khadi ro rahi thi. usi vakt phoolamati jhallayi huee akar boli- 'munh men kalikh lagi ki nahin ya abhi kuchh kasar baki hai? doob maro, sab-ke-sab jakar chilloo-bhar pani men! shahar men kahin munh dikhane layaq bhi nahin rahe.' kisi ladake ne javab n diya.
phoolamati aur bhi prachnd hokar boli- 'tum logon ko kya? kisi ko sharm-haya to hai nahin. atma to unaki ro rahi hai, jinhonne apani zi ndagi ghar ki marajad[4] banane men kharab kar di. unaki pavitr atma ko tumane yon kalnkit kiya? shahar men thudi-thudi ho rahi hai. ab koee tumhare dvar par peshab karane to ayega nahin!'
kamatanath kuchh der tak to chupachap khada sunata raha. akhir jhunjhala kar bola- 'achchha, ab chup raho amman. bhool huee, ham sab manate hain, badi bhaynkar bhool huee, lekin ab kya usake lie ghar ke praniyon ko halal-kar dalogi? sabhi se bhoolen hoti hain. adami pachhatakar rah jata hai. kisi ki jan to nahin mari jati?'
badi bahoo ne apani saphaee di- 'ham kya janate the ki bibi (kumud) se itana-sa kam bhi n hoga. inhen chahie tha ki dekhakar tarakari kadhav men dalatin. tokari uthakar kadhav me dal di! hamara kya dosh!'
kamatanath ne patni ko danta- 'isamen n kumud ka kasoor hai, n tumhara, n mera. snyog ki bat hai. badanami bhag men likhi thi, vah huee. itane bade bhoj men ek-ek mutthi tarakari kadhav men nahin dali jati! tokare-ke-tokare udel die jate hain. kabhi-kabhi aisi durghatana hoti hai. par isamen kaisi jag-hnsaee aur kaisi nak-kataee. tum khamakhah jale par namak chhidakati ho!'
phoolamati ne dant pisakar kaha- 'sharamate to nahin, ulate aur behayaee ki baten karate ho.'
kamatanath ne ni:snkoch hokar kaha- 'sharamaoon kyon, kisi ki chori ki hain? chini men chinte aur ate men ghun, yah nahin dekhe jate. pahale hamari nigah n padi, bas, yahin bat bigad gayi. nahin, chupake se chuhiya nikalakar phenk dete. kisi ko khabar bhi n hoti.'
phoolamati ne chakit hokar kaha- 'kya kahata hai, mari chuhiya khilakar sabaka dharm bigad deta?'
kamata hnsakar bola- 'kya purane jamane ki baten karati ho amman. in baton se dharm nahin jata? yah dharmatma log jo pattal par se uth gaye hain, inamen se kaun hai, jo bhed-bakari ka mans n khata ho? talab ke kachhue aur ghonghe tak to kisi se bachate nahin. zara-si chuhiya men kya rakha tha!'
phoolamati ko aisa pratit hua ki ab pralay ane men bahut der nahin hai. jab padhe-likhe adamiyon ke man me aise adharmik bhav ane lage, to phir dharm ki bhagavan hi raksha karen. apana-sa munh lekar chali gayi.

do mahine gujar gaye hain. rat ka samay hai. charon bhaee din ke kam se chhutti pakar kamare men baithe gap-shap kar rahe hain. badi bahoo bhi shadyntr men sharik hai. kumud ke vivah ka prashn chhida hua hai.

kamatanath ne masanad par tek lagate hue kaha- 'dada ki bat dada ke sath gayi. pndit vidvanh bhi hain aur kulin bhi honge. lekin jo adami apani vidya aur kulinata ko rupayon par beche, vah nich hai. aise nich adami ke ladake se ham kumud ka vivah sent men bhi n karenge, panch hazar to door ki bat hai. use batao dhata aur kisi doosare var ki talash karo. hamare pas kul bis hazar hi to hain. ek-ek ke hisse men panch-panch hazar ate hain. panch hazar dahej men de den, aur panch hazar neg-nyochhavar, baje-gaje men uda den, to phir hamari badhiya hi baith jayegi.'
umanath bole- 'mujhe apana aushadhalay kholane ke lie kam-se-kam panch hazar ki zaroorat hai. main apane hisse men se ek paee bhi nahin de sakata. phir khulate hi amadani to hogi nahin. kam-se-kam sal-bhar ghar se khana padega.'
dayanath ek samachar-patr dekh rahe the. ankhon se ainak utarate hue bole- 'mera vichar bhi ek patr nikalane ka hai. pres aur patr men kam-se-kam das hazar ka kaipital chahie. panch hazar mere rahenge to koee-n-koee sajhedar bhi mil jayega. patron men lekh likhakar mera nirvah nahin ho sakata.'
kamatanath ne sir hilate hue kaha- 'aji, ram bhajo, sent men koee lekh chhapata nahin, rupaye kaun deta hai.'
dayanath ne prativad kiya- 'nahin, yah bat to nahin hai. main to kahin bhi bina peshagi puraskar liye nahin likhata.'
kamata ne jaise apane shabd vapas liye- 'tumhari bat main nahin kahata bhaee. tum to thoda-bahut mar lete ho, lekin sabako to nahin milata.'
badi bahoo ne shraddha bhav ne kaha- 'kanya bhagyavan ho to daridr ghar men bhi sukhi rah sakati hai. abhagi ho, to raja ke ghar men bhi royegi. yah sab nasibon ka khel hai.'
kamatanath ne stri ki or prashnsa-bhav se dekha- 'phir isi sal hamen sita ka vivah bhi to karana hai.'
sitanath sabase chhota tha. sir jhukaye bhaiyon ki svarth-bhari baten sun-sunakar kuchh kahane ke lie utavala ho raha tha. apana nam sunate hi bola- 'mere vivah ki ap log chinta n karen. main jab tak kisi dhndhe men n lag jaoonga, vivah ka nam bhi n loonga; aur sach poochhiye to main vivah karana hi nahin chahata. desh ko is samay balakon ki zaroorat nahin, kam karane valon ki zaroorat hai. mere hisse ke rupaye ap kumud ke vivah men kharch kar den. sari baten tay ho jane ke bad yah uchit nahin hai ki pndit murarilal se snbndh tod liya jaye.'
uma ne tivr svar men kaha- 'das hazar kahan se ayenge?'
sita ne darate hue kaha- 'main to apane hisse ke rupaye dene ko kahata hoon.'
‘aur shesh?’
‘murarilal se kaha jaye ki dahej men kuchh kami kar den. ve itane svarthandh nahin hain ki is avasar par kuchh bal khane ko taiyar n ho jayen, agar vah tin hazar men sntusht ho jaen to panch hazar men vivah ho sakata hai.'
uma ne kamatanath se kaha- 'sunate hain bhaee sahab, isaki baten.'
dayanath bol uthe- 'to isamen ap logon ka kya nukasan hai? mujhe to is bat se khushi ho rahi hai ki bhala, hamamen koee to tyag karane yogy hai. inhen tatkal rupaye ki zaroorat nahin hai. sarakar se vazifa pate hi hain. pas hone par kahin-n-kahin jagah mil jayegi. ham logon ki halat to aisi nahin hai.'
kamatanath ne dooradarshita ka parichay diya- 'nukasan ki ek hi kahi. hamamen se ek ko kasht ho to kya aur log baithe dekhenge? yah abhi ladake hain, inhen kya maloom, samay par ek rupaya ek lakh ka kam karata hai. kaun janata hai, kal inhen vilayat jakar padhane ke lie sarakari vazifa mil jaye ya sivil sarvis men a jayen. us vaqt saphar ki taiyariyon men char-panch hazar lag jaenge. tab kisake samane hath phailate phirenge? main yah nahin chahata ki dahej ke pichhe inaki zindagi nasht ho jaye.'
is tark ne sitanath ko bhi tod liya. sakuchata hua bola- 'han, yadi aisa hua to beshak mujhe rupaye ki zaroorat hogi.'
‘kya aisa hona asnbhav hai?
‘asabhnv to main nahin samajhata; lekin kathin avashy hai. vajiphe unhen milate hain, jinake pas sipharishen hoti hain, mujhe kaun poochhata hai.’
‘kabhi-kabhi sipharishen dhari rah jati hain aur bina sipharish vale bazi mar le jate hain.’
‘to ap jaisa uchit samajhen. mujhe yahan tak mnjoor hai ki chahe main vilayat n jaoon; par kumud achchhe ghar jaye.‘
kamatanath ne nishtha-bhav se kaha- 'achchha ghar dahej dene hi se nahin milata bhaiya! jaisa tumhari bhabhi ne kaha, yah nasibon ka khel hai. main to chahata hoon ki murarilal ko javab de diya jaye aur koee aisa ghar khoja jaye, jo thode men raji ho jaye. is vivah men main ek hazar se zyada nahin kharch kar sakata. pndit dinadayal kaise hain?'
uma ne prasann hokar kaha- 'bahut achchhe. em.e., bi.e. n sahi, yajamanon se achchhi amadani hai.'
dayanath ne apatti ki- 'amman se bhi poochh to lena chahie.'
kamatanath ko isaki koee zaroorat n maloom huee. bole- 'unaki to jaise buddhi hi bhrasht ho gayi. vahi purane yug ki baten! murarilal ke nam par udhar khaye baithi hain. yah nahin samajhatin ki vah zamana nahin raha. unako to bas, kumud murari pndit ke ghar jaye, chahe ham log tabah ho jayen.'
uma ne ek shnka upasthit ki- 'amman apane sab gahane kumud ko de dengi, dekh lijiega.'
kamatanath ka svarth niti se vidroh n kar saka. bole- 'gahanon par unaka poora adhikar hai. yah unaka stridhan hai. jise chahen, de sakati hain.'
uma ne kaha- 'stridhan hai to kya vah use luta dengi. akhir vah bhi to dada hi ki kamaee hai.'
‘kisi ki kamaee ho. stridhan par unaka poora adhikar hai!’
‘yah qanooni gorakhadhndhe hain. bis hazar men to char hissedar hon aur das hazar ke gahane amman ke pas rah jayen. dekh lena, inhin ke bal par vah kumud ka vivah murari pndit ke ghar karengi.‘
umanath itani badi rakam ko itani asani se nahin chhod sakata. vah kapat-niti men kushal hai. koee kaushal rachakar mata se sare gahane le lega. us vakt tak kumud ke vivah ki charcha karake phoolamati ko bhadakana uchit nahin. kamatanath ne sir hilakar kaha- 'bhaee, main in chalon ko pasnd nahin karata.'
umanath ne khisiyakar kaha- 'gahane das hazar se kam ke n honge.'
kamata avichalit svar men bole- 'kitane hi ke hon; main aniti men hath nahin dalana chahata.'
‘to ap alag baithie. han, bich men bhanji n mariega.‘
‘main alag rahoonga.‘
‘aur tum sita?’
‘alag rahoonga.‘
lekin jab dayanath se yahi prashn kiya gaya, to vah umanath se sahayog karane ko taiyar ho gaya. das hazar men dhaee hazar to usake honge hi. itani badi rakam ke lie yadi kuchh kaushal bhi karana pade to kshamy hai.

phoolamati rat ko bhojan karake leti thi ki uma aur daya usake pas ja kar baith gaye. donon aisa munh banae hue the, mano koee bhari vipatti a padi hai. phoolamati ne sashnk hokar poochha- 'tum donon ghabadaye hue maloom hote ho?'

phoolamati ne sir pitakar kaha- 'aisi baten kyon likhate ho beta? janate nahin ho, ajakal hamare adin ae hue hain. jamanat kisi tarah tal nahin sakati?'
dayanath ne aparadhi-bhav se uttar diya- 'mainne to amman, aisi koee bat nahin likhi thi; lekin kismat ko kya karoon. hakim zila itana kada hai ki zara bhi riyayat nahin karata. mainne jitani daud-dhoop ho sakati thi, vah sab kar li.'
‘to tumane kamata se rupaye ka prabandh karane ko nahin kaha?’
uma ne munh banaya- 'unaka svabhav to tum janati ho amman, unhen rupaye pranon se pyare hain. inhen chahe kalapani hi ho jaye, vah ek paee n denge.'
dayanath ne samarthan kiya- 'mainne to unase isaka zikr hi nahin kiya.'
phoolamati ne charapaee se uthate hue kaha- 'chalo, main kahati hoon, dega kaise nahin? rupaye isi din ke lie hote hain ki gadakar rakhane ke lie?'
